Josh was drafted #45 in the 2022 NBA draft, and was immediately one of the surprises of Summer League. The Wolves had high expectations when they locked him up with a Hinkie Special for the next four years. Unfortunately for Minott, just after the draft Tim Connelly traded for Rudy Gobert, as he believed the team needed to stop constantly rebuilding to develop Ant and win some games. This meant lots of playing time for vets Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid, squelching minutes for SF/PF Minott, who played almost exclusively in garbage time.

Some young players get sick of hearing “your time will come - be ready!” Two years ago, Minott didn’t want to go back to the G-League, saying he had already learned all the Wolves defensive sets. Last season, he finally got a little run in the regular rotation when the usually healthy Naz Reid missed time. Minott did what many expected - his athleticism caused chaos for opponents, but it also cause chaos for MIN’s defense. He repeatedly didn’t stay within the team concept of defense and Finch would give him a quick hook. This kept happening, and he eventually lost his rotation job to Jaylen Clark, who didn’t have Minott’s upside, but he didn’t make mistakes either. Minott didn’t take it well, and at one point, tweeted from the bench during a live game!

He’s not a bad pick up for BOS, at least for next year, He has intriguing upside with his athleticism, and maybe with the opportunity BOS could provide next year, it could help him develop. He has so much NBA talent that the Wolves might have kept him despite his mistakes, but he asked the team to not pick up his option so that he could try to establish an NBA a career elsewhere. He has NBA potential, and is worth a BOS flier, if you guys can get his head on straight. Low cost, upside get.

Still scrawny for the 4.

And what are they doing listing Walsh as a PF anyway? He came in a half inch shorter, weighing less, than Hugo did at the combine.

Walsh was drafted 2 yrs ago..he's probably packed on some pounds since then. He also has a 7'2" wingspan. And it certainly seems like they are trying to develop him into a similar player to Brissett was here - and he played mostly the 4..

It's basically positionless basketball these days though :)

Oshae's success, when he's had it, has been as a 3.

Oshae's success, when he's had it, has been as a 3.

In Boston, he was pretty much only at the 4..

Even played the 5 a bit, in the Pacers series..

He was sometimes used as a 3 in Indy, but that was when he was a better shooter. The lack of shooting in Boston (paired with the strong rebounding) made him more of a 4 here..

A role Walsh and Minott could possibly play for us..

1. Walsh is NOT a 4. I know the Cs will need to claim to have 'bigs' this season but no way he's one of them

2. Re: Oshae, BBallRef says the regular season he played in Boston he spent 56% of his time at SF, 29% at PF, 15% at SG, and 1% at C. In his 55 playoff minutes, he did shift up a bit to 50% PF, 43% SF, 5% SG, and 2% center. https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/brissos01.html
Contrary to Hal's claim, he played more at PF in Indy than he did in Boston -- really liked Oshae; wish he'd found a position and a team in the NBA (still could, no doubt).

Bref only uses height to classify players. Tatum is taller than Brissett so in their time together they’d call Tatum the PF and Brissett the SF, but in reality watching the games they gave Brissett PF role and Tatum was the SF. Same with if he was on the floor with Hauser. That stuff skews the numbers. Brissett is the PF over those guys but Bref will say he’s SF. He plays like a PF.

Agreed that Walsh is not a 4. He just doesn’t play that way. He’s a 3. It’s not all about just size and wingspan. Play style matters.

I don't trust that data. It's very subjective. Like if Oshae was on the floor with Tatum, which one was the 3 and who was the 4? It's a matter of opinion. Maybe bballref says Tatum was the 4, but when I watched the games, my eyes tell me Oshae was the 4. Just like my eyes tell me that the time in the playoffs where he made a significant contribution was in the Pacers series when he gave someone at the 5 who could match up with the Pacers since Kornet couldn't get out there to defend their shooters, KP was injured and Al needed a breather sometimes.

Also, whether someone is a 4 or not is also subjective..it's a matter of opinion. We can each have own own opinion - no one is right or wrong about it.

According to ChatGPT:

"Jordan Walsh is a forward who primarily plays small forward, with the ability to also slot in as a power forward thanks to his size and versatility."

I did not say Walsh is a "big". I consider "big" to mean someone who can play the 5. I do not think Walsh is a 5..

The 4 position has evolved. A true PF is a dying breed. For the most part, teams at this point either go with a double big lineup (so a big at the 4) or a single big lineup with a wing at the 4 (like Tatum, KD, Jimmy Butler, Josh Hart, Jalen Williams, Caleb Martin, Marcus Morris, etc. have played the 4).

Guys like Karl Malone, Kevin Garnett, Amare Stoudemire, Elton Brand, Dirk, Kevin McHale, etc. (the old school PF's) would be 5's in today's NBA..or perhaps play some at the 4 if they were in a double big lineup..

Something he and PP have in common, both wanted more playing time. Let's hope Minott deserves it just like PP.

Minott is an analytics darling. And a freak athlete. Still young, age 22. On wolves for 3 years but didn't get a ton of playing time, due to the depth they had at the SF/PF positions.

Perfect flier to pick up on a "2nd draft" guy.

The analytics say he's better than Kuminga..Minott is also a month and a half younger than Kuminga. Kuminga is looking to sign a FA contract for $20-30mil a year. We've got Minott for $2mil on a minimum deal. Good job, Brad!

Also, last season Minott had a WS/48 of .153, which was tied for 29th in the league..tied with Vucevic, Josh Hart and Isaiah Joe.

On the hustle stats chart, he ranks highly in contesting 3's and deflections.

Minott and Garza have posted high PERs (in limited minutes) relative to their salaries and worth.

Hollinger would approve, but both are foul prone (especially Garza, Minott is at least productive if reckless on D), neither has shown any real hint of a reliable outside shot, neither has had great on/off metrics (tho its besides the point cause sample size). Both are "tough" players and both are intriguing in their own ways; Minott is high motor and maybe high upside, Garza scores efficiently inside the arc and doesn't turn the ball over much relative to usage, he could be a poor man's KAT. We'll see.

Minott has really good advanced stats all around. Garza, given his negative defensive stats, not so much.

I could be wrong, but wasn't it you a few days ago that said Brown and Tatum are our best athletes. And I said, it's Minott. Minott is hands down the best athlete on this team. I'm hoping he gets a chance to play and play well. I'm rooting for Minott, Garza, Queta and Hugo to play well this season.
We all know what Brown, White and PP can do.

I think Minott slipped my mind when I posted that the other day..he is probably the most athletic player on the team now..followed by JB.

Then probably either Hugo or Tatum. Then maybe Walsh, then White, then Queta..

I'm not equating the two, but, the vibe I'm sensing is similar to the Tony Allen experience. I loved TA and defended him on this board, but the hook for the detractors were the mental errors which you were going to get a few times a game, and weigh as you will in your perception. I want Walsh to get a run but Minott should be the backup PF with a pretty long rope.

I just hope they'll play meaningful minutes

You'll never know with Joe
He can run PP, White, Brown, Hauser, X lineup for 42 minutes with only Niang and Simons off the bench for meaningful minutes
