Was it?

His switch onto Hart was great and then he doubled down on a driving Brunson to force the ball out of his hands. Maybe you think he wasn't supposed to double?

Kuminga defended multiple players in a matter of seconds.

But JK chased the ball around, leaving his previous man wide open and cutting to the restricted area.
It was a gamble that paid off since Brunson was looking for the shot, not the pass.

Brunson wisely turned when he did because Jonathan Kuminga came over to help. And then Kuminga did something even wiser: As Brunson changed direction, Kuminga reached out and nudged Alexander-Walker in the back to help him change direction with Brunson.

"Buddy (Hield) had asked me if I felt that," Alexander-Walker said. "I didn't feel it. He sent me a clip. I didn't know what he was talking about. It's pretty cool. Maybe it helped, but yeah, I didn't realize what was going on."

Hield and Kuminga both started this season together with the Golden State Warriors where they played with one of the greatest defenders in NBA history. Kuminga, in particular, played 4.5 seasons with Draymond Green, winning a title together in Kuminga's rookie season.

"It's just instinct," Kuminga said. "I'm going to give my praise to Draymond (Green). Growing up around him, watching him so much, I've seen him do that so many times – like so many times. I'm not going in the game thinking about it, but seeing somebody doing it over time, you know, sometimes it's just going to click. And I think Nickeil would have still been in good position to get that steal, especially Nickeil playing defense the way he was playing it, but I've watched Draymond so many times. He's one of the best at doing things like that, small things that won't go in the (stat) sheet but that help a lot."

Kuminga made another sharp double-team on the decisive play of Game 3. With the Hawks up a point with 12.5 seconds left, Onyeka Okongwu tracked a Brunson drive to prevent a shot going to the rim. Kuminga sprinted over to add a double team that prevented Brunson from spinning into a fadeaway shot. Running out of space and time, Brunson forced an errant pass, and Kuminga out-motored Josh Hart to the loose ball at the buzzer.

“Jonathan has just been all-in,” Head Coach Quin Snyder said afterward.

The numbers bear out Kuminga's impact on defense. With him on the floor, the Hawks have yielded fewer points, held the Knicks to worse shooting, gotten more defensive rebounds, and forced more turnovers. The core of the Hawks is still the core of the Hawks. CJ McCollum is scoring in bundles and making clutch shots. Jalen Johnson is leading the way and doing a bit of everything. Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Dyson Daniels are hounding Knicks guards every second that they are on the floor. Onyeka Okongwu is patrolling the paint and making threes.

Every team, though, needs an extra gear in the playoffs (and not every team has one.) For the Hawks, Jonathan Kuminga is driving them to new heights with his strong and savvy defense.

Hawks predicted to cut ties with Jonathan Kuminga for $24.3 million reason

The Athletic's John Hollinger predicts they'll decline the option and either renegotiate with Kuminga or let him walk.

That would set up Kuminga for another dicey offseason after it look a long time last summer to come to an agreement with the Warriors.

"The 'What is Jonathan Kuminga actually worth?' debate enters Year Five!" Hollinger writes. "Kuminga showed some value as a bench scorer in Atlanta last spring, but BORD$ still values him as a high-end reserve, with his $9.4 million valuation falling well short of the contract dollars. I could see the Hawks picking up the option to use his contract in a trade, but it’s more likely that they decline it and either re-up at a lower number or move on." https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/atlanta-hawks/news/hawks-predicted-cut-ties-jonathan-kuminga-243-million-reason/38addb097ddc7c41e0acf4f3

Hawks have gauged the trade value of Jonathan Kuminga, return a real possibilityJun. 17, 2026, 2:08 PM EDT

Furthermore, Atlanta has a $24.3 million team option for the 2026-27 season on Kuminga, who scored 40 combined points in two Hawks wins against the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs. The Hawks have conducted their due diligence and gauged Kuminga’s value on the trade market ahead of the draft, league sources told HoopsHype. With that said, the 23-year-old forward returning to the Hawks next season remains a real possibility.

Kings have had an interest in the past.
Maybe that's where the Sabonis rumors come into play.
I hope we gain value for Kuminga and CJ.

Hmm, my spamming of Lopez would make more sense with JK outta the way. He could still sign to a NAW esque extension which wouldn't be bad.

Interesting.

Suddenly Atlanta has too much third tier talent.

Yikes. Having to waive prospects just to facilitate a S&T for Kuminga doesn't seem like a smart move for the Hawks. Also, where do the salary(s) go that the Lakers would be sending out?

What exactly am I reading?
There is nothing interesting in taking the Lakers trash in this SnT. Trading our 3rd tier talent for their 4th tier? Imagine they think we'll part with our assets [waiving/trading 2-3 guys from enticing prospects (Risacher, Flemings, Carter, Ejiofor, Newell, Gueye)] to send them Kuminga.
Let us send us your trash for your stuff - only LAL

Lakers to pony up to get us to take on Vanderbilt for Kuminga. Not only does it put us at 17, he is essentially unmovable without draft capital attached to him. We would essentially have to turn around and offer up that swap (rumored what Atlanta wants from the Lakers) along with multiple 2nds or a first to get to 15 players.

According to Buha, that proposal never gained traction.

“I have heard that his camp is looking for closer to $20 million,” Buha said. “Doesn’t have to be exactly $20 million, but closer to that side of the ledger than the $10 million side of the ledger.”

The report provides the clearest explanation yet for why negotiations between the Lakers and Kuminga have failed to advance despite mutual interest.

Instead, he suggested a middle ground could emerge.

“If it’s a three-year, $45 million deal and it’s $15 million per year, that’s right down the middle of what both sides want,” Buha said.

Hawks Must Also Agree to Deal

Even if the Lakers and Kuminga ultimately compromise on a contract, another major hurdle remains.

Atlanta has to agree to facilitate a sign-and-trade.

That may prove just as difficult.

The Lakers have limited draft assets after their last two blockbuster trades for Luka Doncic and Walker Kessler. Their most significant remaining asset is a 2032 first-round pick swap, along with three tradable second-round picks, two of which they acquired from Washington in the Deandre Ayton trade.

The most logical salary-matching contracts belong to Jarred Vanderbilt and Dalton Knecht, but previous reporting suggests neither player has generated substantial interest around the league.

Earlier this month, Khobi Price of the California Post reported that Los Angeles had discussed a framework centered on Vanderbilt and the 2032 first-round pick swap.

Two days later, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported in The Stein Line that Atlanta had not considered taking back Vanderbilt in a Kuminga deal.
