If I am not mistaken, the team would need to get below the tax line by the end of the regular season to avoid starting the repeater tax timeline, not at the beginning of the season.
I think Smart's contract could be lower than what's being reported, but if not then there will be time to adjust the roster later in the season.
Once we sign Smart, I believe we'll sign Bird and do a deal before the trade deadline to get under the tax line if needed.

What the hell is going to happen when we re-sign Kyrie, Brown, Tatum and after the tax we are paying SMART $26 million or even $39?
What is going to happen when we draft 2 guard studs in the lottery next year and Brad wont play them because SMART has to get his minutes?
What happens when we have to let Horford or Hayward go because due to the repeater tax because Boston is paying SMART $39 million a year.
I just cant fathom this rumor is true.
We're going to shoot Smart into the moon before we give up Hayward or Horford because of cap reasons.

It is a Good thing the team is being kept intact for now. Only make a move if it is for a star player like QAnthony Davis, Karl Anthony Towns etc. Other than that keep the team intact. The top priority now should be re-signing kyrie Irving.

Marcus at 4/48 becomes VERY tradable the 2nd half of that contract right around the time Davis finally becomes available in a trade. Celts will need that elite defender on a good 12 million per deal to be involved in that future trade.

Kyrie should be the top priority now. Go all in and try to re-sign him. He is a star, and the celtics best player. They can't afford to lose him. Look at game 7 in the ECF, had he played celtics would have won the game. Getting Anthony Davis going to be tough because they are going to ask for Jayson Tatum. Karl Anthony maybe the more realistic option.
Celtics re-signing Marus Smart shouldn't prevent/stop them from re-signing Marcus Smart, or trading for another star player. Get the Kyrie deal done as soon as he reaches free agency.

It doesn't make sense for Kyrie to sign before next year, when his contract can be much larger--and so he has said he won't sign before then.

I was talking about after the season not before. That is when he can sign a 188 million contract. If he does an extension now he loses 80 million. That is not happening. Celtics should come ready to offer him a contract on the first day of free agency. Don't play games. If he is healthy, they shouldn't try to be cheap. Pay him.

I hope it's false and the deal is 9-10 per year as much, overpaying smart and then try to stay under the tax this year only will make the team worse, and this year probably is our best chance.

Celtics outbid themselves . It is what it is. 12 mil is a fair contract. Get your money Marcus because are no loyalties in sports. You can injured and traded tomorrow.

Celtics can win without Marcus Smart but he is better to have him. The talk that marcus smart would be the reason the celtics beat the warriors is not true. He would help but he wouldn't be the reason the celtics beat the warriors. The warriors starter 5 are just too tall , too fast for him, and too good. Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Demarcus Cousins. Not bad to have him on the team, but he is not indispensable.

Keep in mind that player minutes per game are actually higher 240/5. Must account for overtime and injuries.
A 30mpg player who only plays in 75 games is actually only a 27.4mpg player over 82 games.

I like that we are giving him a declining deal, as that makes Smart an appreciating asset barring injury.

Especially in the face of a rising cap. Last two years would be at or below MLE.

Yep, hoping that's New Orleans for the last two years though

Re: Marcus Smart free agency Take 2. "He works hard for the money"
I'm not trolling through this thread to see if it's already been answered, but could someone smarter than me tell me if I'm on the right track here:
We are roughly $8.5 under the cap right now. If we were to sign Smart to a deal that pays just a shade over $11m for this year, we could then dump Yabusele for pure cap space ($2.667m) and stay under the tax line correct?
We can then hot-swap out Bird/Nader (ideally dumping Nader to another team to avoid his $450k guarantee). And we're still under the tax line right?
After all that we'd still have a roster spot available. Could we then sign a guy to the vet min and have him not count against the cap so we can stay under the line?
If so are there any restrictions to who that player needs to be in order for the vet min not to count against the cap? (minimum years in the league etc.). Or do they just need to be willing to accept the vet min?
