I'm a fan of Morant. I really like his game, but drafting him might be a mistake, like drafting Rubio and Flynn on the same team.

But Morant would have been the perfect backcourt teammate to Doncic :banghead:

Perhaps. As @spud2 said, this may be me falling in like with another Sexton again. I fixate on these state of GA guys who end up places other than GT and lament on why we don't land these in-state pros anymore.

And I've turned the page on the Doncic thing. He ain't here. No need to wonder what-if.

I am now fully committed to adding this guy as well as Bol Bol to our starting 5...just for the alliterative novelty.

Should we be drafting for 'fit/need' or 'Best Player'

Except Zion, are all these wings comparable?

Direct, on-the-record answer from the man in charge:

Travis Schlenk wrote:We’re at a point in our development where we’re going to take the best player. We’re not in a position where we can say, ‘OK, we need this kind of player, and we’ll be all set.’ We’re going to take the biggest talent we can get. You can never have too much talent in this league. We’re going to draft — and not just this draft but moving forward — our philosophy is always going to be, especially if we’re going to be picking at the top of the draft, you take the player you think is the best.

...we’re going with talent over fit, for sure. I think some of the biggest mistakes in the draft...is drafting for need, especially at the top of the draft, over talent.

I have an assignment for the board. In a recent interview, Schlenk lays out his itinerary of scouting this week. He states explicitly that he was at the Duke/Wake Forest Game Tuesday. (Obviously)

But then he states he's going to watch another collegiate game on this past Wednesday.

Which game (and which prospects) do we believe he was scouting?

Travis Schlenk wrote:Let’s see. I’m going to the Wake Forest-Duke game (Tuesday). I have another college game (Wednesday). Friday I’m going to Philadelphia. I’ll be home Thursday night this week.

(Tuesday), I’ve been in the office making phone calls with other teams to see what’s going on out there. I’ve talked with several agents over the phone, too. A lot of my work is spent on airplanes, watching basketball games and things like that. It’s not like I’m working in a mine somewhere.

Assignment refused. That wasn't on the syllabus.

You lost me right here. Doncic propels this team into contention for the 8th seed minimum. He would have eliminted any possibility of drafting Zion/RJ, no top ten Dallas pick, and obivisouly no Trae.

I'd take Morant still, and ship Trae to Orlando for Bamba.

Definitely a candidate for the Mavs pick.

Able to man the PF/SF position.

Possible replacement for Taurean?

My notes on him were poor man’s Jimmy Butler type with some physicality to his game. I didn’t love his fluidity but other aspects of his game appear pretty solid. It’s possible he could replace TP.

Hawks would have still tanked with Doncic. Hawks don't have the vets that the Mavs do, Harrison Barnes, Jordan, Matthews, Barea

Watching Virginia/Clemson, Hunter’s D and rebounding have been non-existent and he’s been a shadow on offense. Meh...

We do not need a replacement for Prince. We just need to add as much talent and depth as possible.

Virginia DeAndre Hunter.

I also think there's a chance he was checking out Nickeil Alexander-Walker. He is built like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and plays like Jamal Crawford.

If that Mavs pick falls out of the top 10, NAW could be a solid combo guard to spell Huerter and Trae.

NOTE: He is actually a cousin of SGA and his collegiate team also played on that same Wednesday night.
