Been trying to figure out if this is a big deal or not. Didn't Clay not start basically until his senior year only because that USC defensive front was stacked (Cushing, Everson Griffin, Mauluga)? I mean, the production is really all that I care about (19 tackles for loss & 13 sacks in 26-games) in combination with the physical tools. Some guys are just late bloomers.

I feel less worried knowing some of the context behind it. I think Iowa is just old-school with how they run things.

It took 100 seconds for a reporter to rip the Band-Aid right off the Lukas Van Ness first-round debate.

“Was there ever a point in your career where you’re like, they gotta make me a starter?” asked Stacey Dales from NFL Network.
Van Ness smiled and delivered a response that would have made his former Iowa coaches proud.

“I had two older-classmen in front of me. That’s just kind of the way the University of Iowa does things,” Van Ness said Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine. “They’re always fair and consistent with everybody, and regardless I still had some of the higher snap (counts) on the defensive line. I just learned through this process that every time I stepped on the field, I have an opportunity to prove myself.”

Yeah, maybe. But then you read things like this from a scout:

I didn’t like him as much as everyone else seems to. We were able to run right at him. I knew he’d test well. I didn’t think he was that good, comparing him to some of the guys they’ve had there before. I thought (A.J.) Epenesa was a lot better. When you turned the film on, I thought there was a lack of consistency in winning the one-on-one battles.

And it makes you wonder if there's more to it than the fact that Iowa favors older-classman.

Davis played 39% of the defensive snaps his last season at Georgia. His max snap count for the Eagles was 29 snaps(in a game).
I doubt he ever gets in shape enough to make a difference in the NFL. He's a beast, but potential is just that until it actually happens.

I seen some mocks that were centered on like linebacker or o-line for us in 1st few rounds. Necessary but boring.

Honestly Draft season is my favorite and I always seem to be let down by day 3. Hoping this year we get some flash for names. Could they turn to be garbage, sure, but some excitement would fun.

I want Gute to have a throat punch draft. Would be epic to watch.

*Assuming Rodgers trade comes in*

1st: Quentin Johnson WR
2nd: Jalin Hyatt WR
2nd: Darnell Washington TE
2nd: Luke Musgrave TE

Todd McShay Mock 4.0

15. Green Bay Packers
Myles Murphy, DE, Clemson
The Packers could be in transition this season if Rodgers does end up with the Jets, and they will have to get Jordan Love some help. Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan signed elsewhere, which leaves the receiving group light. So yes, I could see Green Bay going that direction. But there should also be plenty of pass-catching options on Day 2, and Murphy would be a problem for opponents off the edge of the defense. The Packers' 34 sacks tied for 27th last season, and Rashan Gary is coming off a torn ACL. Murphy can drive back blockers, use his great bend to turn the corner and then close on the quarterback with burst. He put together 14 sacks and 23 tackles for loss over the past two seasons.

45. Green Bay Packers
Luke Musgrave, TE, Oregon State
After going defense in Round 1, the Packers have to find an offensive playmaker in Round 2 -- no matter who is playing QB. Musgrave was limited to three games last season and didn't really turn in eye-popping numbers in college, but one watch of the tape shows his immense upside. The 6-foot-6 tight end can make contested catches and stretch the field, and he'd be a good replacement for Robert Tonyan.

Objectively, the funniest outcome would be to trade Rodgers and then immediately trade up in the draft to get JSN as the first post trade move.

I think it's going to be one of JSN, Van Ness, N. Smith, or Murphy for our pick. Only exception would be if Paris Johnson somehow fell to 15. Ideal second round would be a TE and a S if BPA meshes. Would be really nice to get both the Jets seconds and have four picks in the top 45. That would allow us to draft edge, S, and two pass catchers and still add OL depth in the mid rounds.

PFF released a new three round mock and hooooo boy there's a doozy in there.

15. GREEN BAY PACKERS: EDGE NOLAN SMITH, GEORGIA
Smith fits the Packers' newest first-round mold of “elite athletes from Georgia.” He is exactly what a team should want in a modern undersized run defender with his ability to track down plays in space.

I like the pick, though passing on Witherspoon and Johnston would hurt a bit. I also like Bijan here, but maybe in a trade down.

42. GREEN BAY PACKERS (VIA JETS IN PROJECTED AARON RODGERS TRADE): QB HENDON HOOKER, TENNESSEE
Everyone remembers the Packers future-proofing Aaron Rodgers at the end of his career when they drafted Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 draft. Not as many remember the Packers future-proofing him at the beginning of his career when they drafted Brian Brohm in the second round of the 2008 draft. Hooker could easily be the same thought process for Jordan Love.

Nope. Noooo. Not at all. Can't do it. I get it on some levels. Hooker is a 1st round talent. But Brohm was a mistake and this would be too, particularly with needs all over the field.

43. GREEN BAY PACKERS (VIA JETS IN PROJECTED AARON RODGERS TRADE): TE SAM LAPORTA, IOWA
Whatever the Packers wanted Josiah Deguara and Jace Sternberger to be, LaPorta actually is. He ranked second among college football tight ends with 20 broken tackles after the catch last season.

Nice pick.

45. GREEN BAY PACKERS: DI KEEANU BENTON, WISCONSIN
Benton is a versatile defensive tackle with an all-around skill set. The Packers were thin on the defensive line last year and lost Dean Lowry in the offseason. Adding two top-50 picks to the mix is a good thing.

Another pick I couldn't complain about. But here's where I'd look at Gibbs, Musgrave, and Downs. More speed on offense.

78. GREEN BAY PACKERS: S ANTHONY JOHNSON JR., IOWA STATE

Here's where hindsight kicks in. I would have taken one of those offensive options at #45, and gone with Siaki Ika here.

Can't get on board with Hooker no matter how I try. If Love sucks we bottom out and get Williams next year.

I think I'm taking Murphy off my "meh" list. I'm warming up to him more. He's got similar consistency issues that Rashan had coming out, but maybe some of that Bane Gary work ethic will rub off on him at the pro level.

One guy at PFF said if you like Mazi - you should love Benton because he is better. Yet Mazi is getting all the hype.
Smith scares the hell out of me because I still have visions of CM3 getting routed 20 yards around the QB, leaving gaping holes to escape. Other than the idiot QB analysis, at least they tried to cover all the needs in a reasonable fashion. LaPorta just seems like a MLF guy. I also think he is far more ready to contribute than Washington, who I fear wont become anywhere close to Marcedes until his second contract.

I've said for awhile Hooker on day 2 would be a great pick imo.

RBs, TEs, MLBs, and IOL should almost never be picked 1st round imo
