Kobe Bryant voiced his opinion of the criticism received by LeBron James in the wake of Miami's loss in the Finals to the Mavericks.

"I think people need to lay off that kid, that's what I think," Bryant said of James. "I've gotten to know him pretty well, playing with the Olympic team, and I think they just need to back off him and just let him play and let him live his life and let him make his decisions and let him mature as a player."

Bryant said he can relate to what James has experienced.

"It's tough to be under the microscope like that all the time," Bryant said. "So, I would like everybody to just back off of him and just let him play."

someone needs to remind kobe without fans, he'd be broke.i'd happily take in 30-40 mil a year and be called a douchebag much less take in 30-40 million dollars a year to play BASKETBALL.

I've often wondered about this. Going by various accounts, Lebron James is a supreme douche, personality-wise. He's an arrogant prick who talks down to the common folk who are good for nothing but worshipping him. But on the other hand, Lebron seems to have a fair number of friends in the league. Guys like Wade and Bosh stick with him. Kobe defends him. In general, lots of baller seem to get along with him. Is the anti-Lebron sentiment overstated? Or is Lebron a fun guy to hang out with as long as he considers you an "equal"? Or are Kobe, Wade et al just taking the high road and deciding not to publically badmouth Lebron?

Yup, it seems like those who know LeBron the best--other players and coaches like Doc River--have a much higher opinion of him than a lot of fans. In fact, from what I can tell most of them seem to like him as a person---and I bet Kevin Love does as well. I also believe that this notion that Lebron talks down to common folks is overstated.

Good point, hoos. The public knew Deion as "Prime Time." The flamboyant, self-promoter. But when he was playing every one of his teammates, regardless of the sport, said Deion was far from the guy that the public saw and knew. They all said Sanders worked hard during practice, was a team-first guy and never expected or wanted special treatment.

I've usually enjoyed the flamboyant, bragadocius athletes like Rickey Henderson and Deion Sanders and Gil. Lebron ain't those guys. There's a certain joylessness about Lebron. No sense of fun. I'd like him a lot more if he was more like Rickey. And, there's nothing that precludes a guy from being full of himself AND being a great player AND being entertaining. Henderson was one of the greatest players of all time even while being so proud of a $1 million bonus that he framed it instead of depositing it. Or proclaiming himself "the greatest." Deion was one of the best cover corners and return men of all time. Gil was All-NBA three times before he wrecked his knee.

joylessness is a perfect word.

i'll even go a step further. i didn't read too much into it when Blatche was begging for a rebound for his triple double, or ricky davis's self-shot. it's funny. a little boneheaded, but harmless really. i'd take prefer either of those "douche" moves to any instance of trucking over a 10 year old just to stay in a game of horse.

See, Lebron knocking over a 10-year old made me like him better. Because it's actually real. There were no PR considerations, no worrying about his image -- he was trying to win a game of knockout. Guarantee that kid will the story for the rest of his life.

well, if it was MJ knocking the kid over, i could understand. MJ has no "off" switch whereas clearly Lebron does. the fact that he decided to be competitively "on" against a kid and competitively "off" for when-it-matters situations and utterly unapologetic after the fact in both really grinds my gears.

Get over it, pancakes. That was just good, clean competitive fun that everybody loved included the kid who got knocked down. And a gifted athlete like Lebron has enough body control so that the impact of him "knocking" down a kid is much different than the impact of him knocking down another NBA player.

Glad to see Lebron refer to himself as "I" and not "Lebron" or "myself." It would be interesting to see him with a post game.

Good move on Lebron's part--both for himself and for his team. Miami currently has little or no low-post offense so anything they can do to generate points in the paint, create more openings for perimeter shooters and force the other team to defend the low-post is only going to help the Heat's far too predictable offense.
