I think both. Denver wants us to get desperate and NJ wants relevance (that and to irk us in the process). Jersey is playing with house money. If they lose out on Melo, it won't be for lack of effort.
They probably think they are creating excitement for their fans. Instead they are shaking the collective confidence of their young, directionless roster and stirring an already apathetic fanbase. From my own personal barometer, Nets fans do not like this deal. They don't mind sticking it us, we know, but there doesn't seem to be any real enthusiasm being stirred up by the Melo-to-NJ talk. We are far more worked up (but not as desperate) as they are about all this. But Billy King can survive another day saying he tried and had a deal in place, Melo just wasn't sold. I don't think Proky understands the NBA as well as some assumed he would/does, at least the mechanics and dynamics of today's NBA. But again, I could take a nap only to awaken to 'Melo is a Net", busting my bubble if only for a second. I'm sure the Nets like the fact that someone is talking about them.
Denver is just trying to win the press conference (as I think Hahn or Tommy Dee said). If Melo goes to the Nets they can say he wanted out and we gave him his wish. They will be the victims in this scenario, Melo the money-lovin' villain. They are also trying to make sure Donnie sees that they are moving their star for less rotation-ready young talent than we have (despite reports) to offer (surely a Wilson/Fields/filler package gets us to the top of the conversation, especially with Melo indicating he's amenable to signing here and only here if you listen to some). They are underestimating Donnie. Not saying "Melo is ours', not at all but Donnie won't be moved to deal because of these on-again-off-again (rumored) deals with our tri-state rival. They just get us amped up. Incarcerated Bob musta been on Uriji's payroll from the eve of Training Camp. Good thing none of us is GM. Denver is probably at the head of these leaks (with CAA) but they are looking more and more like Keystone Cops as time goes on.
