Re: 2021 College Football Discussion
Lincoln Riley is leaving OU to become USC's head coach. Stunner.

Re: 2021 College Football Discussion
Oklahoma had a bunch of Cal state commits in their 22 and 23 classes, including the #1 QB. Go figure they're now decommitting.

I thought that was a joke when I first saw it on Twitter. College football is crazy.crkone wrote:

Brian Kelly has the personality of a dull knife. Can't wait to see him suffer SEC fan expectations.

Re: 2021 College Football Discussion
I'm not totally up to date on the etiquette of college football, but what?
I get when a coach leaves a school early after their season is essentially over except for a marketing bowl game. It's crappy that they expect NFL draft prospects and seniors to risk injuries for it but willing to jump ship, but whatever no one cares about the music city bowl and maybe you didn't have the leverage to make them wait.
But ND could be playing in the National Championship. Both Michigan and Cincinnati play ranked team and could easily lose. How can you preach as a coach only to leave your team in that situation?
Surprised the NCAA/Conferences dont stop this. it is a reeeaalllly bad look. Very stiff penalties for negotiating a contract during the season or suspensions/salary return if you don't coach a bowl game.

10/95 plus incentives for Kelly. My god, these contracts are just unreal.

Re: 2021 College Football Discussion
I don't disagree that the whole thing is just a greasy look. But I also think at this point everyone involved with college sports should be pretty aware how all this **** works. The players should know by now coaches are as loyal as their options and will look out for themselves first. With that players should do the same and if they don't want to play in a bowl game or want to transfer just do it and coaches, media, fans who give them a hard time can go **** themselves.MartyConlonOnTheRun wrote:I'm not totally up to date on the etiquette of college football, but what?MickeyDavis wrote:

I have this vision of Notre Dame hiring Fleck but making him wear the leprechaun suit.
Imagine that douche running up and down the sideline or getting his personal tunnel entrance in that suit. Priceless.

Yeah, the crazy part is the unrealistic expectations just means 6 years Kelly will be getting a couple million doing TV awaiting his next job. All while the university eats that contract and poaches another coach.

Re: 2021 College Football Discussion
What sucks is ND has a shot to be in the playoffs. But with the early signing period starting Dec 15 (they should push that back until after the season is over) coaches don't want to wait to make moves. That's fine if your team is in a regular bowl game but not when your team could be in the playoffs.

Re: 2021 College Football Discussion
I couldn't belive the Riley contract details when I saw them.
I know CFB is big but it's kind of gross to know how much money universities are throwing at these coaches. And that's not even including the booster money.

Shocker - that #1 QB, Malachai Nelson, from Los Alamitos - has already committed to USC.
Honestly, I'm okay with USC being good again, which I presume they will be under Riley. I'm ready for a new (old) college football meta, which this could be the first step of. Obviously USC has been elite before, but I just want some new blood aside from Bama/Clemson, and to a lesser extent Georgia/Ohio State.

I think it's generally the booster money that enables it, but I do get your point and fully agree. There is something to be said for the revenue sports, especially football, funding entire athletic departments and even academic programs - but obviously these contracts are so far above and beyond balancing that.
