jvuc wrote:Can you tankers put together a glossary of terms. For example,
1a. Tanking = Dumping good players for bad contracts and playing bad players to improve the draft position
1b. Multi-year tank where the team is bad for a few years accumulating picks and high draft positions
1c. A single year tank often brought upon by injury or poor start of the season where management tries to improve their drafting position and sheds expensive non-core players for picks/young players
2. Rebuilding = Trading veteran players for bad contracts and picks but still trying to instill a winning culture and develop young players
3. Retooling = Trading away inefficient players, UFA and veterans for low cost or young productive players and picks while still keeping the team competitive
There are more definitions as well. But I find this thread is jumbled because most don't even agree what "tank" means and are using it in a way that differs from another person view of tank. Heck, I don't even know if my definition are accurate.
Tanking = (CLE) (PHI)
-Dumping vets for whatever picks/prospects you can get so you are in the 20-25 win range. if you cant get picks/prospects than trade your vets for nothing.
-Taking on assets with bad contracts that dont extend past the yr you expect to exit your tank
-Being extremely cautious with injuries, and letting the coach use bizarre lineups.
Rebuilding = (ORL) (BOS)
-Trading vets for picks/prospects. Trading positive value players for nothing is only used as a last resort.
-Taking on assets with bad contracts that dont extend past the yr you expect to exit your rebuild
-Its unlikly, but winning games with your young team isnt considered a failed rebuild. You wont get a great pick but you must already have some great young players.
-You dont need to have been good to rebuild, you can rebuild a bad team, or a mediocre team.
Retool = (IND) (MIL) (Most teams)
-Build on what you have. Trade redundant players for players of need.
Rebuild/retool hybrid = (HOU)
-Retooling while also collecting picks/prospects, that can be used or traded for a superstar.
-The idea is to balance winning with building on your future.
Win now = (NY) (BRK) (BC)
-Same as retool, but much more relaxed when it comes to trading picks/prospects for vets.
Accelerated rebuild = (BC) (DET)
-Ending a rebuild prematurely, and entering a retool or win now phase.
The time frame can vary depending on each teams situation.
Circumstances can decide which direction you take. If you are retooling but suffer bad injuries or if your team is just bad, you might be forced to tank/rebuild. if you are rebuilding/retooling hybrid, then acquire harden/dwight you can switch it up to straight retool.
