still won't be surprised if they trade him -- he's due for an extension soon, and his production could be replaced by a vet min guy like Ish Smith or Svi, not worth $4M on a pricey contender IMO

4/$21, 2 years 9.3 guaranteed.
Telling you we need a poll on whether the PP extension will be bigger than the (Gradey) Dick contract.
All that needs to said on the subject.

I wonder if we're interested in extending him because we really want him long term or because it's going to be hard to sign anyone for a price other than the minimum for a while? They may just want an asset that makes 5 to 7 million annually for use in salary matching later with our 2nds for trades...
I'm still not convinced he's a shoe in for more minutes. How many minutes per game will holiday and White both be on the bench? Not that many, maybe none. If one of them is on the court don't we want someone bigger than Pritchard in?
I could see him being the guard version of Blake Griffin this year. Only semi in the rotation, comes in when we need a spark of energy or a blowout, but randomly gets to start sometimes to keep the bench intact when we have an injury to a starter.

And if what you mentioned about our interest in an extension is true does PP prefer the guaranteed money of our extension vs. a trade to somewhere else where he could try to bet on himself? It's not entirely his choice of course either.

The wiretap says we are discussing an extension with him and he's in line for a bigger role. The source was Jared Weiss of the Athletic.

Re: Welcome to Boston, Payton Pritchard! – (Discussing Extension)
Do extensions need to have guaranteed money on them? Could Pritchard sign a deal that kicks in next year for 3 years, $36M with none of it guaranteed?
If Pritchard balls out this year, that's probably still higher than what he'd make anyway.
If he continues to struggle to crack the rotation, BOS probably waives him and he hits FA, which is what he'll do anyway if he doesn't sign an extension. BUT the key for him here is that he leaves open the possibility that BOS picks up his $12M option just to use as salary filler in a trade. Then he gets to make $12M even without earning it this year.
IDK, idea I just thought of. Seems like a nice way to work around the harsh trade restrictions of the 2nd apron and it feels like only upside on Pritchard's end.

Re: Welcome to Boston, Payton Pritchard! – (Discussing Extension)
You have to sign him to the extension.
It's a win-win.
Either he stays and you have a decent guard off the bench. Someone who could be similar to an Eddie House/Seth Curry/Patty Mills type of guy, sparkplug, energy shooter off the bench as a 7th/8th man.
Or, you trade him..and by signing him to the extension, that makes him a more tradable contract - works better for salary matching purposes, and it helps boost his trade value.
Perhaps we trade him next summer when he hits restricted free agency, similar to what we did with Grant - at least that way, we were able to get a pick and a TPE, rather than him walking away and we get nothing.
But with the emphasis that Brad showed this summer on adding size, I wouldn't be surprised if this is Pritchard's last season in green.

Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

You need at least 1 year guaranteed iirc.

Re: Welcome to Boston, Payton Pritchard! – (Discussing Extension)
I have to be honest, with Rob being moved, and the Celtics likely playing smaller this year with Jrue and D-White starting, I think Pritchard has a real opportunity for serious backup minutes. The range of the possible is huge for him. I could see him not taking a step, and somehow averaging 6 or 7 points again. Conversely, I think there is a world where the Celtics are VERY good, and he plays A LOT, and averages 10-13 ppg in a serious role. That's what makes a potential extension so difficult. He could be worth $6M, he could be worth $10M, either way one side is taking a serious gamble.

Most of the time I see Pritchard play, I’m mildly impressed and feel he should play more. So I’m down with a PP extension. Wish he was a couple inches taller but it’s fine. I think he’d make a decent rotation player.

Re: Welcome to Boston, Payton Pritchard! – (Discussing Extension)
I'm trying to take baby steps here, y'all forcing a sprint. I think Pritchard will contribute well this year during the regular season and be a good 3rd guard. I've even mentally retired my Abe Simpson gif for his forays into the lane. That's not enough? Now we gotta talk extending him?!?!?
If you can get it super-cheap or even what he makes now with a tiny raise, ok, fine. Much beyond that, no thanks. If he doesn't produce this year, that contract isn't tradeable (other than as ballast). I love me some good ballast salary, but with the 2nd apron in the rearview, even I get a little gun shy here. If he does produce, he's RFA. Not a huge incentive to do much but a homerun deal.

Exactly. It's just good business.
In a related note, it's nice to see this for the kid after the embarrassing number of posters ready to run this kid outta here on a rail simply for saying that he'd like to play. Glad that he's gonna get that opportunity.
and that's "MR. Irrelevant" to you!!

No big surprise here. 7.5 aav for the full years is totally reasonable. They like him and its a cheap third guard for an expensive roster. No notes.
