Re: 2025 NFL Off-Season
Eagles clearly planning on replacing a lot of these guys via the draft, they do have a great track record in terms of that.
But it is risky. You have guys that have proven themselves in your system, and they won a SB for you.
So far, out of all the big free agents they had (Baun, Becton, Sweat, Williams), they kept one of them, and ended up moving on from two more of their secondary who both played a key role in the SB (Slay and CGJ).
Which is fine, Baun was the #1 priority out of everyone, but they definitely moved on from some key guys, these weren't nobodies for them.

To be fair, I kind of get it. His dead cap is still higher than his actual cap hit. Ya they would save the 10 mil roster bonus, but still doesn't make up for the difference.
His actual legit contract out is after this upcoming season. Next year his cap hit is 57.5 vs a dead cap hit of 35. So they can actually save 20+ mil cutting him after this upcoming season.
For this upcoming season, his cap hit is 40 mil, while his dead cap hit is 75mil...
There is just no getting around this. This was a horrible contract to give out and even dumber to then draft Penix.

Duke4life831 wrote:Yup. Unless you have a bad GM/Cap guy. That Kupp contract should end up being in that 2/23-25 range. And it's not just the guaranteed money you need to wait to hear.
Take the Jonathan Allen contract for example. It first reported as a 3/60 deal. That 60 immediately got cut down to 51 once you take out the "not likely to be earned" incentives (those incentives aren't even accounted for on the cap, unless they miraculously hit them and even then, they don't actually hit the cap until the next season).
Then that 3rd year for Allen technically is on the books as a 17.4 mil cap hit. But the dead cap is only 4.6 mil. So they can just cut him and save themselves 13 mil. And the 4.6 really is just around 1% of the cap, not much of a hit at all.
So the initial report of the Allen contract being 3/60. Actually ends up being a 2/33 contract.
I broke down the DeMarcus Lawrence contract in another thread. But basically, $10m was tied to incentives. So, the base value of the deal is $10m per year. Not the $14m that was originally reported.
Essentially, it's a 2 year- $18m contract (guarantees).

Re: 2025 NFL Off-Season
Also from all the reporting coming out right now.
Sounds like KOC wants Rodgers in Minnesota. Sounds like the hurdle now is the price. Seems like the Vikings only will be willing to take him on at a very discounted 1 year deal. While Rodgers may still be looking for a legit QB deal. But some reports are also saying they don't think this will be a sticking point for Rodgers.
I'm now at the point where I expect Rodgers to be in Purple this year...

Fortunately the Eagles have recent draft picks on the roster at these positions who might step up: DT Moro Ojomo, OLB Jalyx Hunt, G Tyler Steen, S Sydney Brown, CB Kelee Ringo.

Wow that's surprising.
So maybe they don't have a lot of confidence in McCarthy's health or his progress in learning the offense in the offseason.

Yup. And when you break that down, that's essentially 3% of the cap.
Is anyone really going to complain about taking a 2 year flyer on a former pro bowler? And that flyer is just 3% of the cap.
These are pretty much low risk, high reward contracts.
The Cousins contract is basically the complete opposite of these kinds of deals. The Cousins contract is the kind of deal that can really cripple a team for a few years

The reports on JJ seem to be all over the place at the moment. One report will say he's ahead of schedule, while a different one wont come straight out saying he's not on schedule, but there are "worries".
I think it's a combo of maybe not being completely sold on his health. But the biggest thing. I think the coaching staff feels like they have a legit chance to win it all. And the question is probably being asked, "who gives them the best chance to win it all next year, Rodgers or JJ?"
Because they really didn't lose anything from last year's team. While drastically upgrading their two biggest holes from last year's team.

I'm just confused as to why they would take on more dead money basically (sunk cost). They already owed him $65m. Now it's $75m in total?
They had the option of releasing him with a post June 1st designation. That way they could've spread the hit over 2 years.

Yeah. Pretty much every guy leaving has a replacement already on the roster that’s been recently drafted, they just gotta step up. All these guys have shown potential but in small sample sizes outside of ojomo who’s already part of the regular DL rotation. What a great draft pick ojomo was.lol
Not sure how I feel about brown and ringo taking on a larger role in that secondary, but we will see. Another year with Christian Parker as the eagles DB coach should help them as long as another team doesn’t poach him.

I was watching someone talk about the deal a couple days ago (since some Vikings fans were open to the idea of him coming back to Minny for cheap to be the backup). It's a pretty tricky contract from what it sounds like and far beyond my basic level of understanding of the NFL cap haha.
But what it sounded like is this. Kirk on the roster this year, is cheaper than him not on it. His dead cap is 75 (65 prior to this bonus), but him on the roster and all the bonuses have his cap hit at like 40 or 50. Plus there is something with the way his roster bonus works, that there is a possibility it gets offset next year if he's on a different team (traded).
So long story short. Sounded like there was no actual financial benefit for the team to cut him this year. Especially with next summer being a far more beneficial time to part ways with him.
But ya I won't lie. I think I have a pretty solid grasp of the basics of the NFL cap. But once it starts to get real advance, I start getting pretty lost haha

Kupp will likely never see that 3rd year.
I am aware and it is irrelevant. Even if it is something like 2/25 not only a washed up receiver will take up that much space in those two years but also it will limit your ability to manuever those two years by limiting your ability to front load future contracts.
Guaranteed portion of the contracts has become a trendy coping mechanism for fans of teams that give bad contracts but every dollar you waste will matter eventually.

The only justifiable way this blows up in their face is if he gets hurt & doesn't see the field for them. Which is entirely possible given his recent history. That's my only real holdup with this signing. But I need to see the details before I pass judgement. None of which is known.

The Vikings liking McCarthy enough to choose him over Darnold probably means they like him enough to choose over A-Rodg.

There is an inherent Danger. Sure, Dangers Lurk with Darnold, Older Rodgers etc..., BUT there is also one relying on an untested Gun, going into battle

Even if it's unlikely McCarthy wins in his first season (although Brady did it so not totally unprecedented), playing this year could still contribute to Vikings winning superbowl the year after by getting him playoff experience. Whereas with Rodgers the downside is he only plays as good as old Wilson, then it pushes the timeline back where they probably can't win next year with 1st run McCarthy either.
