He articulates what he's going to do very well. I'm not convinced that Jeff wasn't doing a lot of the same stuff (he had a reputation as a game tape buff from Phoenix) but he certainly wasn't clearly communicating what he was doing with his public comments. I have to think that the communication lapses spilled over to his private dealings with the team as well, causing confusion on what goals were. A lot of players spoke of that. Hard to hold people accountable to unclear goals.

Off the bat, that's something I can easily say for Fiz.

Jeff wasn’t in the gym with young guys everyday this early in the off season. I’m pretty sure there is a quote where be basically said offseason development is on the players. I think you can even see from the comments of the players that Fitz I doing something very different. Remains to be seen if that difference will be shown on the court.

I know its very popular to rag on Jeff these days and its easy as he did a poor job

but remember how different things were for him

he was brought in to run the triangle for Jackson with a team of Rose, Melo, Noah, etc

he wasn't brought in to be a developmental coach

yes he had KP and Kuz and Chassen Randal but come on, its not like Fiz

he was first a triangle man winning now then he was a tank commander and then it was right back again
he was expected last year to lose and then they were winning and then kp went down and they were expected to tank

it wasn't a very fair situation for him

and he has a hot daughter

jeff got a raw deal. he wasn't the right man for the job last year clearly, but the situation was bad. that's on phil.

and... she get it from her mama, as wingo might say.
RIP magnumt

thanks for everything, thibs.

Just on what I hear from Fiz he takes his job and how much the players develop/perform under his leadership very personally. Where as Jeff never really gave me the impression he cared all that much since he would smirk and chuckle after losses or anytime he was questioned about the under performing.

Knicks trying to blend together a middle-class man's version of C's and 6ers:

Frank - Simmons
Knox - Tatum
Mitchell - Embiid
Burke - Isaiah Thomas (we're a couple years late, so what)
Dotson - Rozier

KP still a unicorn.

I could go in on Horny all day. Fiz even if its just a tactic to give Frank confidence he said he would of started him last year. Jeff never gave Frank that kind of confidence or approval. All Jeff kept talking about was basically politics in terms of having the vets play/start over rookies.

Totally agree there. Him thinking that weird political stuff was going to somehow help him was absolutely his undoing. He actually did take the Jack Joke too far. Fiz sounds like he'll go merit based as best he can.

Jeff was too PC as a coach.

He played the political game to get the job by kowtowing to Phil's "vision"

That made him a lame duck as soon as Phil was gone and he never recovered his own sense of direction and coached in win now mode instead of developmental mode

If Phil had been canned earlier and Perry was hired sooner, I'm pretty sure Jeff would have been gone, but with the season so close it was almost impossible to replace him

He really was doomed from day one and he played a big part in his own demise because of the terms of engagement he accepted from Phil in the first place. He didn't hit the reset button hard enough last season to distinguish himself and remained fuzzy about his goals and intentions.

The MRob news flow has commenced. Knicks getting the word out this guy is going to be ready to contribute from day one.

While he looks to have a multi-year developmental trajectory, it also appears he will be in the rotation from day one.

New York Knicks: David Fizdale says Mitchell Robinson has no rust

https://dailyknicks.com/2018/07/05/new-york-knicks-david-fizdale-mitchell-robinson-rust/

According to Marc Berman of The New York Post, coach Fizdale made a significant observation about Robinson following a Las Vegas practice: He’s yet to show signs of rust.

“No, I have not seen rust. As crazy as it is. I was just talking to [player developmental director] Craig Robinson about it. I was going to think this kid’s timing would be off or there would be a lot of stuff we have to stop for him and teach. Kid’s got pretty good feel for the game.”

Crazy...this guy was being trained DAILY by an NBA level trainer who apparently works with AD...not some random middle school basketball coach..

Lets hope these guys get EVERY Chance possible to sink or swim likely to sink and swim.

He will. Fiz is not equivocating. MRob will be on the floor THIS year.

I am now guessing he might start and Kanter will come off the bench. It makes perfect sense in terms of committing to both youth and fielding the best potential defensive starters from day one.

Or he will come off the bench and play starter minutes just to remove any stress about starting, but this guy should be our center of the future either way.

Knicks can’t believe how good their new ‘athletic freak’ looks

https://nypost.com/2018/07/05/knicks-cant-believe-how-good-their-new-athletic-freak-looks/

Spoiler:
LAS VEGAS — No rust?

Fourteen months is a long time not to play a 5-on-5 basketball game, unless you are Mitchell Robinson. The Knicks’ 7-foot center project has floored Knicks coach David Fizdale.

“Ma-a-a-n, is he athletic,” Fizdale said of Robinson, whom they selected with the 36th pick of the draft.

After two days of summer-league practice, Fizdale is more impressed with his sharpness.

“You would’ve thought he was playing the whole time,” Fizdale said. “That’s how solid he’s been.

“No, I have not seen rust. As crazy as it is. I was just talking to [player developmental director] Craig Robinson about it. I was going to think this kid’s timing would be off or there would be a lot of stuff we have to stop for him and teach. Kid’s got pretty good feel for the game. He’s in great shape. And athletically, he’s a freak. He’s in the one percentile of high flyers and runners. There’s just not many guys who are that athletic.”

With Robinson’s intriguing backstory, all eyes will be on the New Orleans product in Saturday’s summer-league opener against Atlanta at UNLV. One of the hot recruits coming out of high school, starring in the all-star games, Robinson enrolled at Western Kentucky and dropped out after taking one summer class.

Instead of playing college basketball, he used the time to train in a gym every day with the NBA as his only goal.

During his press conference two weeks ago, Robinson admitted he hadn’t so much as played a 5-on-5 pickup, though he had worked out with Pelicans stud Anthony Davis. His last outing was the Jordan Classic in April 2017.

Fizdale said Robinson is like “a blank canvas,” but at the presser still made a Clint Capela comparison.

“I want to encourage him to be great at what he’s good at right now,” Fizdale said after Wednesday’s practice. “Can we just get him in a game? His game right now is running and jumping. So anything that has to do with that, how good can I make him at that first?”

Knicks president Steve Mills and GM Scott Perry chose Robinson partly because of the faith they have in Fizdale as a developmental coach. Robinson’s growth will surely be a reflection on Fizdale’s reputation.

It doesn’t sound like Robinson will be putting up significant scoring numbers during the five-game summer league.

“We’re going to be working on jump hooks, post-up game, we’re going to always build that kind of incrementally,” Fizdale said. “But how can we get him a confidence that ‘I can go play in the NBA game right now because I can hang my hat on this.’ Right now it’s his athleticism. Getting him to run the floor every time.

“Getting him to screen at the right angle and to get to the rim with speed every single time. Getting him to be in a stance on every pick-and-roll. Being able to switch on that pick-and-roll and protect the rim. Those little areas, can we make him great at that? And then jump hook, 15-footer, all of that stuff will be built behind that.”

Enes Kanter is expected to start at center, and the Knicks re-signed young Luke Kornet for the main roster as his backup. But the 20-year-old Robinson clearly is the future. The Lakers had mulled taking him at 25 and were hoping he dropped to 39. If it weren’t for the Knicks, Robinson would be a teammate of LeBron James.

“He is a fun project,” Fizdale said. “I’ll tell you that.”
