You're fine. SATs are not a big deal. So what if you don't get into Penn State? There are plenty of good schools for engineering. Worry less, live more.

Think of it this way. One day in the future, you're going to be dead. Everything you've ever worked for your entire life, everything you've ever know, will be gone in the blink of an eye.

Depressing, yes. But, it is also a path to freedom my brother. Your future is what you want to make it. Life is your choice to choose your own path, to do what you want. What matters is that you're happy with what you're doing, and you don't need Penn State for that. Hell, a future without a college degree wouldn't be the end of your life (although I think college is a great thing regardless of what your major or career is simply because it expands your ability to reason and view the world around you). Everything you know will end, but that is just the incentive you need. Live the life you want to live rather than worry about these things. Penn State is arbitrary when you look at the grand scheme of your life, and the fact that one day you will be dead, and you never know when that day will come. As a result, you must live life to live it, not simply to get from A to B to C to D. Be an engineer because you like the work, study because you like what you're studying.

I'll tell you about myself a bit. I used to want to be in a profession that made me great. I was obsessed with being better than the normal person, I wanted to be essentially a king amongst men. I wanted some value in my life, and I did not know what that value was, but I felt that it was out there, and if I could be great, my life would have that value, I wouldn't be wasting my life. Then I learned how foolish such a view was. I was trying to reach a destination that didn't exist. Being 'great' had no value, for all people are forgotten(eventually), and when you're dead, such value means nothing anyway. I started to live life because I like to do so, not because I thought I had somewhere I had to go. Now I go to school, I study, I work, I do these things because I want to. I like what they do to me, and I like my life. I have no goals, I have no aspirations, I just live, and I live in such a way that I am fulfilled. Where before I was driven by this thirst for something that did not exist, now I am quenched, and I can enjoy life. I love academia, I love learning and experiencing things. Where before these things were obstacles to reaching that goal I had, to being what I wanted to be, now they are what I strive for. Instead of suffering now for what I thought would be a payoff down the road, I am free and eternally happy.

Well, I hope that makes sense for you.

tl;dr Life sucks, have fun while you can. Better than suffering your entire life because you think one day it'll be worth it and you'll have fun. Love life.

That's depressing as hell lol...I'm going to keep my goals  I don't want to be just another person going through the motions. I set a goal a few years ago to get into law (contract law - sports/entertainment law) and nothing is going to turn me away.

King of Troy (Priam   ) is right though. Worst case scenario is you don't get into your #1 school. My sister had a 3.7 and 1800 (I think) on her SATs and was rejected almost everywhere. However, she likes the school she's at now. There are plenty of engineering schools (the one I am at is a big engineering school) so if you don't get into your first choice, you'll still find another school to be happy at.

You don't have to worry though.

You missed my point on goals, its that you should have them to enjoy them, not to transition from A to B. Do what you enjoy, more of a hedonistic approach.

I agree with the college assessment. I did poorly on my SATs, 1230/1600, 1880/2400, as I had an allergic reaction to a new medication the week leding up the exam, and it led to insomnia and a lack of appetite. Over the 7 day period leading up to my SATs I got 12 hours of sleep and consumed probably 3k calories.

I was still accepted into Tulane University(early admission for free) and SUNY Binghamton, the only two placed I applied. I go to SUNY Binghamton, love the professors. Top 20 in the world in Political Science, ranked alongside Oxford, even with a tiny(compared to the universities in the rest of the top20) staff. Totally changed my life.

The school doesn't matter, it is your attitude and your professors. The name on the sign out front means very little, its what you experience inside that matters. The fact of the matter is that you can find great professors anywhere, all you have to do is look.

Interesting point of view. Trying to play Devil's Advocate, lol. I appreciate your view. So you are saying to do what you want because YOU want to, not what society says. That is tough, because society tends to shun those against itself. I would say I go to work, and try my hardest in school, because I want to. I'm thinking aloud, and when I ask myself what makes me want to do well in school, and I guess it is to make my parents happy, and because I want to for myself. Define value.

I found out long ago that I really cared little for society, so being shunned is something that I'm not opposed to, and is something I'm actually used to at this point in time.

I just do what I do because it makes me happy. If it doesn't do so, I don't do it. I used to buckle to social pressure, like going out and partying because that was what was expected of me in addition to the peer pressure, but I found that staying home with a good book or a movie was far more enjoyable than going to a bar or a party. So, yes, they did shun me for doing so, but I moved from a situation of being unhappy at a party with people, to being alone and happy. I'll take the latter any day.

Value in itself is tough to describe. It is what you want it to be. I guess in my original conception of value, something of value was something memorable, something that existed beyond one's own sphere. Something of value was something acknowledged as worthy by society, something remembered by society, appreciated by it. Now, something of value is something I appreciate. A book is valued because I enjoyed reading it, it made me think, I liked how it made me feel. It had value because of how it makes me feel, and those feelings are not related to what others think. It is really a 180 degree change. Value for me went from meaning a social consensus of worth, to personal feelings of benefit and indeed happiness.

I'm not sure if that really answers what you wanted me to answer though.

It gets easier when you become self sufficient. I am with King of Troy on living your life to fulfill yourselves. Everyone is different on what's important to them, the important thing is figuring out what's important to you. There are people who all they care about is making a lot of money and having expensive things and that's ok if that's what they want out of life. There are others who care more about having free time to do things they love and that's ok too. THe point is that life is too short to be wasting it doing things that you don't care about only to please others.

Trust me I understand. Being a college student doesn't leave much on the wallet. :)

I made the mistake with going with a cheap laptop and I payed for it later. It was a Sony Vaio and it literally fell apart in my last year of school and I took pretty good care of it.

I just don't want people to pay for something now and end up paying for it again later. I will say that you are looking for a good brand, go ASUS.

suprised to hear you say sony is cheap, I am in the market for a laptop and have been going back and forth for months between the apple mac book and the sony vaio which I thought was a top notch laptop..... the apple is very expensive and I liked the sony because it seemed like it was very well put together. I heard good things about ASUS.

Dude, you'll be fine.

In high school, I really didn't care that much about getting good grades and to top it off, I got a 1490 on my SAT...which, if I remember the scaling correctly, is pretty average/mediocre. I still got into Penn State and now I'm sitting pretty going into my last year with a GPA I can't even increase anymore because its too high.

You should definitely get in, and if you don't get into University Park you can always go to one of the commonwealth campuses and do a 2+2 program. Depending on what type of engineering you plan on doing you'd either end up at University Park, or Penn State Harrisburg.

I must warn you though, the engineering program is supposedly pretty damn tough so don't get upset when you can't pull A's in those classes. But honestly, you should be fine.

I feel the same way.

I'm majoring in Marketing, minoring in English and am in the honors college to top it off...but honestly, I really don't want to go corporate and do market research for products such as Tide, or Lays potato chips...it's just not what I deem exciting or worthy of my future.

Honestly, being a military brat and all, I'm thinking about going into the army and attending OCS to be an officer. I feel like it's a waste of the hard work I did in college but I just desperately want to get away from away from the possibility of a stagnant life and I want to see more of the world and what it has to offer...I don't know if that's crazy or what, but that's where I'm at. Hopefully everything gets figured out by the time graduation rolls around.

Also, you can try and contact former Soldiers who served and are now in the Corporate World and see if they're interested in working with you (since your parent(s) served).

I know they do but I haven't been able to find a link or any information on it online...I'm pretty sure the military has on outside organization doing their advertisements and marketing for them...

I probably should have gotten a technical degree if I wanted to do anything with the military, now that I think about it. But yea, between former soldiers and the Penn State alumni association, I should be okay with finding opportunities in the real world. Well, hopefully.

Oh I see. But colleges really don't care for it anymore. Solid grades and a good ass essay will always trump SAT scores.
