Been saying it for a while, but Silver and Malcolm Turner have big plans for the D-League. I detailed it in another thread here and elsewhere.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Declined Wilcox Trades

Post#82 » by Ranma » Sun Feb 21, 2016 8:56 am

Dan Woike, Orange County Register (2/20/16)
Wilcox’s name was involved in multiple potential trades before the deadline. Orlando called and discussed a Wilcox swap, offering former NCAA hero Shabazz Napier.

The Chicago Bulls and the Clippers talked about a Wilcox-Tony Snell deal that would’ve also cost the Clippers a second-round pick.

The Clippers declined.

“I think he can shoot. I think he can play. He has a lot of guys in front of him,” Rivers said, “… but, I still think he can really play. He’s a great kid, a high-character kid. He works hard at it.

“And I think that’s a kid that you hang on to.”

Wilcox Is Their Only Hope

Post#84 » by Wammy Giveaway » Sun Feb 21, 2016 6:41 pm

So I did some research on the Clippers difference rating against the Warriors since C.J. Wilcox was drafted in the 2014-15 season (thanks again, Basketball-Reference):

Chris Paul: +15, +4, -2, -6, -14, -15, -25 (-43)
J.J. Redick: +4, even, -2, -8, -17, -20 (-43)
Luc Mbah A Moute: -7
Blake Griffin: +8, +7 (twice), -12, -23 (-13)
DeAndre Jordan: +16, +10, +3, -2, -8, -10, -17 (-8)
Austin Rivers: +5, -2 (twice), -3 (-2)
Jamal Crawford: +19, +6, -9, -10, -11 (-5)
Paul Pierce: -2, -5, -18 (-25)
Wesley Johnson: -1, -2, -12 (-15)
Cole Aldrich: +2
Pablo Prigioni: +9
C.J. Wilcox: +13, +3 (+26)
Jeff Green: even
Branden Dawson: +10
Alex Stepheson: +13

Even though C.J. Wilcox's minutes took place in garbage time (8 total minutes in two games), he was the only player to maintain a plus for his rating beyond one game. Every single starter had a minus. Last night's threat was just a sample of what Wilcox could do when he's given an opportunity.

Ranma, must Doc abolish his veterans philosophy and trust in his young guys to defeat the Warriors?

Wilcox Needs PT in NBA, Dawson Putting Up Numbers in D-League

Post#85 » by Ranma » Tue Feb 23, 2016 10:18 pm

Wilcox has always needed minutes to develop and be comfortable in the offense. The fact that he couldn't find time has been a perplexing decision by Doc. I wouldn't go as far as say "abolish" with regards to a veterans philosophy. Doc needs to be more flexible and proactive in giving his hand-picked rookies a chance to contribute. By not playing Wilcox at all, Doc has basically diminished his value as a trade asset. If Doc really does like Wilcox as he's been saying since he drafted him, then he could have accelerated Wilcox's learning curve to either contribute sooner or use him as a trade piece to get him a preferred veteran presence.

Dawson has played for three different D-League teams this season. Wilcox has been on three in two seasons.

That would embarrass me if I worked for the franchise.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

I have no doubt Ballmer would grant us with a D league team of our own. all it takes is a half decent executive to remind Steve...
ehhhhh f it.

I already said this on Tucson's thread about the D-League, but can you watch those Dawson highlights and really think that's player development? is it any more beneficial than him playing at his local gym with some random dudes? just look at that, no one plays a lick of defense, no one ever passes the ball, it's just guys chucking shots, and Dawson happens to be more athletic than most, so he gets good shots easier. At least in summer league guys try to set screens and stuff.

I'd love for the D-League to be a serious minor league to the NBA, but it's not even close to that right now. And unless the way it works changes deeply, it won't be meaningful to player development for a while.

I'm sure Ballmer's weighted the benefits of having a D-League team, it's not like he's not aware of it, or he doesn't think he should invest in player development. But the question is a lot more complicated than the black and white question yes or no. Investing a few million dollars in something that might or might not be good is a lot easier when you're not the one signing the checks.

while there's certainly nothing like actual real NBA experience, even just playing day in and day out is going to be a lot better than rotting on the bench.

i think the other bonus to having a d-league team is the parent team can set their own goals and boundaries for the child. if it's doc's prerogative to say "hey start giving a crap and get these guys some more minutes, focus on this and that" i think that'd has to be helpful. again, nothing's the same as real live NBA play time but the team can make good use of a d-league team if it so chooses.

It will be changing deeply and that just so happen to coincide with the influx of new TV deal money and the D-League being able to offer legitimate salaries to play in the league.

My whole point is the guy isnt even learning our system, being coached by anyone in the organization and is just playing for random teams 3,000 miles across the country. Thats what we think of our investment we spent $600,000 to purchase and pay $525,000 this year plus incurring the cost of luxury taxes on top of that.

Wilcox to Canton While Dawson in Erie

Post#95 » by Ranma » Mon Mar 7, 2016 1:43 am

You know it would be nice to have our own NBDL team so that our players could play on the same team to build up chemistry that might carry over to their time in the NBA. Instead we have Branden Dawson playing for the Erie BayHawks while C.J. Wilcox will now be playing for the Canton Charge.

Doc would rather have old washed up players throw up bricks than let a young player get a chance. Such a waste.
