I'm hoping the change in culture can help him mature. But it is worrying that his issues persisted across two coaches so we can't just blame Byron Scott if he was like this under Luke Walton as well. Hopefully getting traded is a wakeup call and he grows up with a fresh start. He has a lot of promise.

Thanks for typing all of that! Very Informative since I'm thinking of also rooting for the Nets now that Russell is here.
And to answer your question (as a Lakers fan), I definitely think he can. Mostly after the circus that the Lakers were in the past two years. The fans never gave him a chance, and this trade is the best thing that happened to him in my opinion. I don't think his "immaturity" was a problem, he was always one of the hardest workers on our team, and the best player.

I also have a question, Do the Nets have good shooters on the roster? D'angelo on the Lakers had only one shooter (Nick Young), and the rest could not even hit open shots. If the nets do have shooters, I think it can help Russell's game immensely.

I actually think we have some good shooters on the roster, not great, but adequate.

Lin-DRuss-DVD-LVJ-Acy (JHam)

DRuss' gonna get some spaced floor

I imagine we will add another shooter

We'll be all set if we get a good 5

DRuss is like Kinder Eggs, 3 wishes at once! (TJ/Vasquez/Crabbe) Marks must be ecstatic after those three disappointments

DarLin' could be like Parker/Ginobili, we just need a good big, maybe take a Portland contract with the pick, package both picks to trade up. That should do it. Throw a max offer sheet to Noel.

Yeah that kid has talent and has already produced well for 19 and 20 year old. He is in the perfect spot with a staff that will help him be the best he can be.

ignore the trolls here saying he will be out of the league in 3 years... they are just butt hurt lopez is gone or insecure there is a new starting guard on the roster that could cut into Lin's minutes or shine.

Longtime Lakers fan here, probably older than most here...I came in when Earvin Johnson was drafted by LA in 1979...

Here's what you've got in D'Angelo Russell.

IMO, Russell is pretty much what he's going to be right now - a good NBA rotation player who will show you flashes of brilliance every now and then but ultimately will leave you wanting more. But that isn't the problem.

The problem is, he may not ever won't work hard enough to take his game to the next level. He appears to me to be the type of player who's good with where he is. A bit too cool for school.

Magic & Pelinka traded him because of his attitude. Can he play ball? Definitely. Is he a difference maker? Will he transform your team from average to good, from good to great? No. He hasn't demonstrated yet the ability to move the needle.

Byron Scott tried to sit him down and he didn't respond well to it. Luke Walton discovered what Byron already knew and did the same thing. Two different coaches with vastly different philosophies and styles came to the same conclusion. Both cannot have been wrong.

The Lakers blew the pick; Porzingis was the obvious choice at 2 behind KAT. But the Lakers felt they needed a star, a charismatic figure to take over for Kobe, and chose Russell over Porzingis. Mistake. Russell has the attitude without the game to back it up.

I don't mean to dump all over him. Hopefully this will be a wake-up call to him. I just don't see in him the kind of leadership qualities that you want to see in your floor general. Lonzo Ball appears to have more of that attitude; we'll find out. But to me a lead guard, you have to inspire your teammates to want to follow you. We didn't have that here in LA last season.

With the pressure off of him to live up to great expectations, hopefully he'll succeed in BK. I just don't know that it's in him to transcend being good enough and reach for greatness.

The trade itself was incredible for LA. Lopez is a much better player than Mosgov, whom I liked and plays his role well; it was just an odious and stupid contract. Not his fault. But to get back an expiring big contract in Lopez, another draft pick AND to get out from under that contract...and you give up a prospect in whom you lacked confidence...Magic & Pelinka should be arrested for that heist.

Yep. I pointed it out yesterday. I can understand tempered expectations, me I am very excited because I know that this guy can play, but there's been some comments here that reflect just that....either resentment for lopez being traded, or insecurity over Russell now being the team's top player. Hopefully the overwhelming positive direction that we are headed in will render that stuff moot

Compare this to the other commentary from LA fans we've seen on here.

Troll harder bro. And best believe, if this kid was a bad guy, he would NOT be brought in here.

Fact of the matter is, the Lakers have been a mess for the last two seasons. I'm not judging him based off of any of that. the kid's rookie season was flushed so that Kobe Bryant could have his ass shined and kissed.

He gets a clean slate here. But have fun trying to poison the well.

You think NS is home with his tinfoil hat on absolutely losing his **** after this DLo trade? Probably wants marks fired for net getting Ingram back in the trade.

That's what I'm saying reading the other blog is like going down a rabbit hole of nonsense

I'm like do you realize what we potentially got back

Never in a hundred years did I think you'd get that kind of player for Lopez at this stage of his career

Honestly thought maybe a contender trades for him at the deadline and we get back young rotational players

Not a potential Superstar

Yes, most players who come into the nba stop improving in their 2nd season.

I'm not going to say that Marks and Atkinson cannot be wrong. However, the #1 thing that they look for besides character is a player's work ethic.

Looking at D'Angelo's past, it's easy to conclude that he's immature and he doesn't have great character...yet.

But if the Nets put that aside in their evaluation, it means that they are very confident that the player they are taking on will work hard to improve.

Maybe you're right. Maybe the Nets didn't do their due diligence in reviewing Russell's profile. For now, he's going to get a clean slate.

IMO, Russell is one of the kids who has had everything come easy to him. Although you'd expect him to be an A "student", he does what is necessary because he's bored and looks to show off.

I think the combination of being traded from the Lakers as well as taking the time to study with Lin and Atkinson will change him. IMO, he's put up decent stats playing sloppy as hell basketball. If Kenny and company are able to push the right buttons and get him focused, he will be very good in this league.

The Lakers blew the pick; Porzingis was the obvious choice at 2 behind KAT. But the Lakers felt they needed a star, a charismatic figure to take over for Kobe, and chose Russell over Porzingis. Mistake. Russell has the attitude without the game to back it up.

Porzingis wasn't a sure bet at the time of the draft. He was thought to go between 4-8 and it wasn't until the first 20 or so games of the 2014-15 where people started BSing about how they knew he was going to be good. Heck, the Lakers were toying with the idea of drafting Okafor, so your suggestion that Porzingis was a safe bet but the Lakers just wanted flash is dubious. Everyone knew Russell's flaws but his intangibles and skills were too good for almost any team to pass up.

Yeah, at the draft, wasn't everyone surprised Lakers took Russell and not Okafor?
