The kid is bored.
Funny, he actually wants to play. Would love to see what practices look like. Is he asked to do very little in practices as well?

Re: Sekou to Orlando?
Yeah I watched him last game. First minutes he ran his ass off down the floor after every rebound, trying to get into good spots. Made cuts to the basket.
But he never got the ball. All the plays were for other people. He touched the ball a few times, passing it along as the ball swung around.
If my team was getting beat by 20 and guys wouldnt pass me the ball, tough times. Especially if the offense is set up so that I am not even supposed to touch the ball, just stand in the corner.

I think we are bad enough to let him work on everything/anything in game with real minutes. Deal with everyone freaking out while he figures it out

Right?
At this point, what’s he gonna do? Single-handedly cost us a loss?
Are we fighting for a playoff spot?
What is there to lose by playing him?

Look, he's still young so he has to work up the hierarchy and learn to know his role. Thats how you stick around in the league, any player that makes it to the NBA can destroy 99% of the population in a 1 on 1, it's the ability to play in a team offense that let's you stick around.
Having said that, I think Sekou would benefit a lot more with more minutes and also occasionally letting him call his own number to get a bucket or tweak the offense so that he can be more involved instead of setting screens and run to the corner every play. The kid clearly wants to play a quicker pace, considering he can run like a gazelle in the open court and run fast breaks properly

Re: Sekou to Orlando?
This year has been tough on young players that need team development tools (Summer League, G-league, normal preseason) to realize their potential. Obviously some players don't need this much support but the Pistons knew what they were signing on for when they picked Sekou and they hoped he would grow and they'd get something better than a 15th pick traditionally is because they took the risk and were willing to develop him.
While all the usual tools aren't available to him this year at least they benched Blake and opened up some floor time for him. He needs it and they need to see if he can grow.
What year will be better to give him time than the remainder of this year. Next year they will draft whatever is the highest ceiling player regardless of who they already have. someone who is getting minutes now won't be getting as many next year. He needs to show he can continue to grow and is worth minutes next year, with his remaining time this year.
I don't know if he can and I don't know if he can't yet but the clock is ticking and Id hate to see it run out without the Pistons investing in him being successful.

I'd like to chalk that quote up to youthful ignorance, but Doumbouya hasn't seemed engaged for most of the last year. Maybe his brief early success led him to think he deserved a bigger role prematurely. Complaining to the press hurts his trade value while undermining whatever relationship he has with Casey. Cultural differences. maturity or attitude, something seems off.
Some players take whatever minutes they get and make the most of them. I'm not sure Sekou will do that consistently, as he hasn't so far. He'll get enough minutes this season to show whether he's part of the Pistons future but that quote makes me wonder.
Guaranteeing 10 million to a raw athletic European 18 year old doesn't always work out.

Let the young man have his ego - no worries there. His game not evolving much - lots of worries.

Remember Darko? People on this board aggressively defended Darko his first 2 years here. The reason I created my account on RealGM was to create a thread entitled,"Why the hell didn't we draft Bosh!"

Cheap ass decision by the Pistons not to have a team in the G-League bubble. Sekou only started playing basketball at 12 yrs old. Now rode the bench the last two years. Kid needs to be getting 35mpg in the G-League.

Re: Sekou to Orlando?
We’re a basement dweller NBA team this year. No reason to not play him at least 25 minutes per this season.
Let’s allow him time to develop. If he’s terrible, it not like he’s killing our chances at the playoffs.
If he’s terrible, at least we’ll know.

since the Pistons clearly don't believe in him, might as well. He's never going to develop in DET. Why not get something for him?

Still like Sekou for Bamba. They both need a fresh start.

I would do that in a heartbeat. Nothing wrong with swapping one project for another as sometimes a change of scenery can do wonders for players.tmorgan wrote:Still like Sekou for Bamba. They both need a fresh start.

No.
Bey and Stewart were both picked after 15. 15 and less are also Cole Anthony, Poku, Tyrese Maxey, Quickley, Pritchard, McDaniels, Bane, Maledon (damn, few places above is Haliburton)... The fact that a draft top prospects are not super-hyped doesn't mean a draft is weak

Re: Sekou to Orlando?
I think I'm still more bullish than most on Sekou. He was drafted as a project yet he hasn't had a real offseason to work on skills (last offseason with covid doesn't count).
He'll still be 20 at the start of next season and this year has been fairly atypical in regards breathing room for practices and there's been no G-league, etc.
He's actually looked decent with regards to handles and driving to the basket. On D when he doesn't blow assignments (which can be coached up) he's actually had stretches of being a good on the ball defender (you can't coach the athlticism needed for that).
There's definitely no guarantees with regards to where he ends up but I think that people wanting to dump him for very little are a bit premature.

I'm firmly in the 'give Sekou one more year' club. He still has upside so we should see it through.
