Mavs books are a mess lol. It's not so much Luka getting the max money, or even THJ. It's the mid-tier contracts that are horrendous: Powell, Bertans, Dinwiddie. Bullock is making $10 mil next season, Boban is making $3.5 million next season. For reference, Whiteside signed for the minimum IIRC for 16-18 minutes a game. I'm not really sure why they gave Boban that much money. Then on top of all of this, you're adding Brunson's 20-22 mil.

Even in 2023-2024, they're at about $108 million not including Brunson's extension which probably puts them over the cap. Just from a casual observer, they're probably better off letting Powell/Kleber fall off the books, but they have to do something with Dinwiddie/Bullock and probably THJ. That's way too much money tied into 3 people.

The NBAPA should be grateful for the Jazz and Quin Snyder's system that gives hard working players a big stage to showcase their talents and make big bucks.

Damn... Some of the takes regarding Brunson have aged worse than milk.

Dallas can offer the 8% raises or the 5 years..

I remember being convinced Dallas would offer him this deal. But they didn't come close.

In fact Knicks got him for $100m over 4 years.

Crazy. Even at that time he was on that Brogdon/FVV level and they both got ~20% deals

Kudos to Big J for catching the parallels. In my wildest hopes I didn't see it working out this well.

The ended up paying a 4-year older Kyrie Irving, a worse player than current Brunson $10 million more per year.

This is actually a great comparison in hindsight. A “ superstar” version of Damon Stoudamire.

I can't find it but the thread where the Knicks signed him aged worse.

If you think this is bad, people trashed the Knicks for signing him.

Jazz's perimeter defense is weak, a lot of perimeter players are able to exploit it.

Take a look at how Jalen was ineffective against the clippers in last year's playoffs for 5 out of the 7 games.

I think the real calibration of Jalen's abilities is taking the average of the 2 series; which is to say he'll give you 15 points a game on decent efficiency.

Sorry but you were totally off on that analysis big boss.

I remember being somewhat skeptical of Jalen's star quality after that Jazz series, notwithstanding Jalen stepping up to average 32 ppg in the first three games playing without Doncic, resulting in a 2-1 Maverick's lead. My thinking was that the Jazz were overly reliant on Donovan Mitchell for offense, and that Mitchell often didn't have good energy left for defense, resulting in random guys emerging to look like stars. Brunson was also built perfectly to bully Conley in the paint. But it turned out that Jalen really was a star in the making.

Honestly, I don't think Dallas keeps either. I think they blow it all up cuz it's not a championship core. Defense wins championships and first play ins.
