Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
By the way, I've been giving much more thought to not using the full midlevel if we can't get someone like Beverly or Danny Green. If we stay under the taxpayer midlevel of $5.7, we don't have to worry about the apron. We could then guarantee Jonathan Simmons salary and him and Bolden would give us room to acquire a guy or guys that make about $10 million or so. It actually gives us more money to spend.
The obvious downside is that we'd likely have to use picks to acquire anyone worthwhile with those two. If you could sign Noel for $5.7 and then trade those other two for a decent guard (someone like E'Twuan Moore?) while bringing back Scott, we'd have the makings of a decent bench.

Thought about it (and Nerlens) but wasn't sure either were full MLE candidates
FWIW, there was a thread on the T&T board discussing the center market and there were some pretty convincing arguments that Noel isn't going to be that highly in demand and the flooded center market will leave a decent number of options to pick up on the cheap.
I think with the center market, to get the guy you want you’re gonna have to pounce the minute the free agency period starts. But if you’re willing to wait a few weeks and take not a perfect fit you can get good value.

I think that's right but I'm not sure there is a center out there that is such a perfect fit other than perhaps Dedmon so you're otherwise making the less than perfect fit concession any way.

Yup. Like the difference in fit between Ed Davis, Nerlens Noel, and a Khem Birch (who I don't think the Magic bring back if they re-sign Vuc) isn't all that much.

Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
Im not overpaying for Dedmon. Totally understand that his "skillset" theoretically is an ideal fit, but he's been on the woeful Hawks the last 2 years. Im not sold that he's worth a decent chunk of change to somehow come back here at 30 years old and immediately upgrade our bench when Embiid sits.Dedmon is also not exactly Mr.Durability himself.
Id rather wait for value and continue to develop Bolden + a draft pick.

I'm far less interested in that after looking at the guys that would realistically be available for what we have to offer that are in that salary range. Feels like they could do better just spending the money.

I’m new here, but I don’t think you would need to spend anywhere near $5.7m for Nerlens (put aside whether he’s willing to return or if Brown is willing to have him) - he made $1.8m on a one year deal last year and played under 14 min./game. Can’t imagine he commands much more than the minimum, and certainly not if we are willing to give him a guaranteed 2 year deal.

Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
I like the Idea of a Nerlens Noel or Noel "type" of Center being our backup.
Sure a stretch big is always ideal (We could look to draft 1), but more times then not they are usually pretty meh on defense....its just the nature of the landscape of cheap backup bigs.
A Noel allows your bench to defend and hopefully hold a lead. Flank him with a stretch 4 (Dedric Lawson?), a scoring wing, Zhaire and a PG who can run the pick & roll and shoot and you have the makings of a decent bench & 10 man rotation. 1 of Simmons/Butler/Tobias are usually going to be out there as well.

Welcome to the board!
You may very well be right. There is a lot more cap space available around the league this offseason so I think salaries will be going up. But every year there are guys who are not the first choice of teams that slip through the cracks and make less than you'd think (such as Nerlens last year) so its very possible he is one of those guys again.

Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
Nerlens has a really good year on a playoff team. The minutes are sort of misleading because he was backing up Adams and it’s not like the two of them can play together.
5.7 might be a high water mark but it only takes one team to think he’s a starter and he gets paid.

For some reason, I got the feeling that Brown hates Nerlens. I can’t remember the exact reports, but some people wrote that Brett rejoiced when they dumped Nerlens.

Those accounts also said his collars were normal and he was a good GM so they weren't exactly a paradigm of accuracy

Yeah. Little Eric lost all credibility when he said those collars were normal.
That is where i remember that quote from.

if vucevic signs a max deal with the kings, willie cauley stein will be looking for work. like noel, i don't know if anyone sees him as a starter. besides winning, the backup to embiid should get more minutes than anywhere else.

clippers, lakers and nets have the capspace to blow up the mediocre center market.

Javale Mcgee is another vet big man I wouldn’t mind seeing how cheap we could get him. He played a pretty solid 22 mins a game for the lakers. Wouldn’t be the worst 15 min a game backup if other options fail.
Luckily there really are a lot of options on the market. Would anybody really be upset if we struck out and end up adding something like McGee, Lin, and Ariza to the bench?

I don't imagine the market for DeAndre would be poor enough for him to take the minimum, and if he was going to do that, it would likely be elsewhere (maybe staying in NY or going to the Warriors to start).
