The shorter throw from 2B can sometimes make all the difference, there have been many aweful SS who look great when they move to 2B, Barreto could be one of those. If not, CF should work fine, he's athletic enough to fit there and if that doesn't work out his bat has the potential to play in RF or LF.

Yep. And you leave him at short unless it starts to affect his confidence because i) there's a minimal chance it comes together, and ii) the things learned playing short apply to 2B rather well. And I have little doubt that he can play CF...range shouldn't be an issue there.

The highly-anticipated Owens/Norris matchup didn't go so well...8 hits and 8 runs surrendered by Norris in 3+ innings.

On the brightside Norris lasted past the 1st this time?

At least one prospect is having an absolutely brilliant outing.

Smoral with 9 K's and just 1 BB through 5 in Bluefield.

Smoral's control is still an issue, but ye gods can he overpower rookie league hitters. He's at 15.2 K/9 right now.

Norris went through the first eight batters like a knife through butter but hit trouble with two out in the third. Ben Badler said he had good stuff, but poor results. And all of his trouble was with contact, not control. So maybe location.

in Smoral's outing in Bluefield, Urena is 3-4 so far, so our future SS situation continues to unfold rather well.

At least his walks are trending in the right direction. His BB rate over the past 4 outings is 3.4/9. He did have two wild pitches tonight though.

There's little doubt that he's a long-term project. Does seem to have done enough to avoid the dreaded third year in short-season, though.

That Vancouver team... what offence

Another opponent demolished, leading 12-1, and has punched out 16 hits

Barreto 3-5 including a HR .336
Pentacost 3-5, including a 3B .429

Seven of the nine starters are hitting .293 or better as I write this.

Labourt tonight, six scoreless with three hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

He just turned 18, send him where? I don't know if we necessarily want to rush him to Lansing, but if he keeps swinging it like he has, the club may not have much of a choice.

Lansing wouldn't be crazy at all, plenty of advanced 18 year olds have been pushed to full season A ball, especially Latin American guys. Someone made the Rougned Odor comparison earlier, who played a full season in A ball as an 18 year old. Besides, the jump from the NWL to the MWL isn't that high, Barreto will not have a problem there and it will allow the Jays to set up future promotions more aggressively, matching his performances, a guy like that has to be pushed constantly.

Safe to say that Dwight Smith has rebounded from his awful June. He hit his eighth homer of the year, pushing his OPS for July above 1.000. Time for NH.

There are definitely reasons to be hopeful there. He's in the midst of a very good ten-game stretch with a bunch of doubles, walk rate is good, strikeout rate is surprisingly good. Only thing missing to date was hard contact, and that appears to be coming.
