I know. That doesnt change the fact Kareem will have more RPOY shares. It's Jordan's problam he couldnt hold as much as Kareem and it should be taken into consideratio when picking the GOAT. just saying...

Kareem always had a case, but reality what is more impressive? Kareem getting about 10.25 votes out of 20 full years or MJ getting 9.57 votes in 15 years (but really 13 full years), as really in 1995 because of limited games and 1986 he didnt' play?
Also Kareem was getting POY because people were saying no one else deserved it over him in years he was out in round 1 or played bad. Had MJ been out in round 1, there were always other candidates that could have finished ahead of him. Not only that but MJ actually for a good 4-5 years had two other top 6 players all time to go head to head with in the rankings for POY.
Also let's not forget that Kareem only will have won 2 POY years he won the titles, while MJ would have won 6 POY's when he won titles. That sure as hell means a whole lot more IMO.

The equivalent would be something like MJ in 1992 going out in round 2 or in 1993 he going out in round 1. That would hamper him in the POY those years clearly and other guys would finish ahead of him.

I think these POY shares are a good first step in all-time great consideration. However, not all years are equally difficult to get votes in, and not all POYs are equally good. If you believe that Jordan at his very best was clearly superior to Kareem, then I'd think it would take more than a slight POY share edge for Kareem to rank higher.

Now with that said, I think a project like this really demonstrates the issues with Jordan's career. When people as "Is it even possible to surpass Jordan?" I roll my eyes - it is definitely possible to end up with a POY share that is well above Jordan's when have the possibility of 19 year olds entering the league and spending 15+ years at or near their prime. If I guy does that with peak that's even debatable to Jordan's on a well built team, it's going to be really tough to say that Jordan contributed more in his shortened career than that other guy.

Now, you might think that that example is not going to be that common, and you're right. I'm not saying it's a given that someone will surpass Jordan in the next 20 years, but if basketball maintains its popularity for the next 50 years, the only way Jordan goes down as the GOAT is if you're factoring in worldwide popularity.

   Karl Malone          13

   Tim Duncan           12
6. Magic Johnson        11
   Michael Jordan       11
   Shaquille O'Neal     11
9. Charles Barkley      10
   Kevin Garnett        10
   Kobe Bryant          10
12. David Robinson       9
     Dirk Nowitzki       9
     Larry Bird          9
15. Moses Malone         7
     Patrick Ewing       7
17. Artis Gilmore        6
    LeBron James         6
    Scottie Pippen       6
20. George Gervin        5
    John Stockton        5

Going to be on vacation for about 2 weeks, so I doubt I get the chance to do a few years on here.

lol @ kobe not being #1 from 05-07 when the overwhelming consensus from coaches, gm's, players is that he was the best.

lol @ kobe not having an mvp from 05-07 if the overwhelming consensus from coaches, gm's, players was that he was the best.

Then why wasn't he MVP? Or Finals MVP? He was 3rd, 4th, and unranked in the MVP voting--that doesn't sound like consensus best to me.

And yeah, with all the Lakers fans in the project, there's been a clear anti-Kobe bias. You're totally right on that one.

Hey everyone? We can just go ahead and disband the project. Jacks4 thinks our results are flawed.

I feel so empty inside.

You know, I went through google news archives and could not find an official time, but I did find this:

Runner's World magazine lists as dubious reports that late basketball star Wilt Chamberlain once ran the Honolulu Marathon

Unfortunately, the entire article is a pay-per-view thing and I don't feel like shelling out the $2.95 (lol I'm poor right now!) so that's the best I can gather. If you want to read for yourself and are willing to pay, here's the link

I don't know if anyone's been to this site before, but there is an absolute ton of old games available for purchase on DVD.

If you want to really be speechless, read the "Watermelon-Gate" passage in Simmons' book.

But yeah, this place is incredible. I spent about an hour looking around and I couldn't believe everything that was available. There is a bunch more beyond that particular page you found.

What page is that on?

And go ahead and link to a seller if you find someone with good 60s and 70s stuff. I was excited about that guy having all 6 games of the 77 Finals.

Not sure, but it's in the index.

Summary: Barry, Russell and the play-by-play man are in the middle of a broadcast when they showed a picture of young Bill. Barry pipes up and asks, "Hey, who's that guy with the big watermelon grin?"

As you can imagine, Bill was not amused.

I doubt you'll find any 60s stuff on that site. It just doesn't exist. I'll keep an eye peeled for the 70s.

That was even worse in real-time. The look on Bill's face is classic. Rick just had zero common sense. Too bad because he's extremely smart and he'd be a great color guy.
