Still can't believe we haven't heard anything legitimate regarding Jackson.

Keep in mind the situation back then rather than looking at it in hindsight. We gambled and placed our faith in Rodgers. We gave him long-term security that he hadn't "earned" to that point. He appreciates that, which is why he hasn't bitched about a new deal.

Right... but then he earned it from the first day that he stepped onto the field as a starter and has made himself into the most valuable player (by far, IMO) in the NFL. He is massively underpaid, he deserves a new deal and he's going to get it sooner rather than later.

I'd say he's more than paid us back for 'gambling' on him. He did that the first year he started, IMO... then he won us a Super Bowl by having one of the best post season runs ever and then won an MVP having one of the best seasons of all-time.

He's crazy underpaid for how good he is and he has been for the entirety of his contract outside of the first training camp when he got it and no one (besides the Packers) knew how good he really was. He's been a $20-$25 million dollar player playing for $10-$11 a year.

I don't disagree that he's massively underpaid this season. I don't disagree that he's outplayed his contract by miles at a time.

In the scope of his value around the league, AT THE TIME OF HIS SIGNING, we were the best deal on the table, and the best deal on the table by MILES. Aaron appreciates that we offered WAY more than we needed to, because we believed in him, which is why he hasn't complained about the deal once it became blatantly obvious to everyone with eyes that he was outproducing it.

Would Rodgers have gotten a 4/20 deal anywhere else when he signed with us? If you assume after that he picks up the massive deal after year 4 it would still come out to 6/60 over the course of the 6 years.

The longer this drags on, the more likely Jackson ends up a Falcon IMO. Both sides are interested, it's just a matter of finding a number that both Ted and Jackson an live with. That number may not exist. :(

Considering Flynn got 3/20? Yes, I think he could have got that. I think he could have got better than 4/20.

If we lose out on Jackson and on Jennings and the numbers they sign with other teams are reasonable......well, I wouldn't be happy. But that said, nothing is final on any of this.

What do you think he would've got in 2008, with only 7 games of starting experience?

That's what I'm thinking. Especially Jackson, he's not going to get paid that much. So if we want him, and it sounds like he wants to play here, we shouldn't be stubborn and walk away over a few mil.

It just means we have more space in future years because we put more of the burden this year on Rodgers' and Matthews' deals.

Around what Flynn got, possibly more. He was a first round pick playing for a great QB coach, behind a great QB, who had an excellent showing against the Cowboys. I really believe some team would have gambled on him and given him a pretty big deal that was shorter on the years side.

QBs who show any sort of promise get paid and usually get paid a lot.

One way or another Rodgers is what... 4, 5 years into his deal now? So he has probably outplayed his contract by $40-$60 million dollars so far.

I'm not worried about it if both of those guys aren't Packers. I might actually prefer to miss out on them.

So much for having SJax signed by the time I took my morning dump.

GJ realizes if he goes to Minny Ponder or Cassell will be the ones (trying) to throw to him, right?

Willing to bet a lot more than 4/20. Look at the deals that guys like Flynn, Cassell, Kolb, etc. have gotten. FA QBs are a highly speculative market. I bet he'd have gotten 6/50 on the low end.

If 6/50 is your final answer than we offered him 15 million dollars more than that.

Okay... and I'd say it's reasonable to say he has outperformed his deal by $40-$60 million so far. So how is it that the deal is still "fair" and "balancing itself out"?

It's not "fair" if you you look at a year in hindsight and say Player X is worth Y. That's not how the NFL works though. If you look at the situation at the time, and look at all the factors it becomes clear that we were pretty generous. Aaron has repaid that generosity over the course of his current deal. Ted doesn't bid against himself. He gave Aaron a deal that was extremely fair at the time.

Now, we will again look at all the factors and come up with a fair number for his next deal. I expect that number to be astronomical and keep Aaron a Packer until he's 36 or so.

I guess I don't get what you are trying to say.

So he is way better than what we are paying him and he has outperformed the deal that we gave him... and you agree (or at least I think you do) that QBs who have shown some promise and go onto the open market usually demand a pretty big contract.

I guess where you and I have a huge disconnect is you think if Rodgers would have become a free agent he would have got a $4-$5 million dollar a year deal. I honestly think he could have got the same contract that the Packers gave him from someone.

I think he would've gotten close to 7 or 8 in retrospect. I don't think he gets near 11 from anybody else.

So did you feel it was a terrible signing at the time?

The main thing I take away from this debate is that we really need TT to do something very soon.

Return to Green Bay Packers
