I almost posted this NYT article here but didn’t get around to it. I was reading along already thinking how crazy it sounded, then Lasry popped up.

Honestly, I just spent ten minutes writing a post trying to tl;dr it, but there were so many incredible details that it became 1000 words long. Basically they were somewhere between a small upstart media company being mismanaged by people who didn't know what they were doing, and a complete and total fraud huckster job perpetrated by two bros who did an insane amount of work to con a **** load of people. I err on the latter.

I only initially looked at it because Lasry was a member of the board and was recently named head of it. But even if he wasn't, this would be one of the most fascinating and hilarious stories I've read in a long time.

ETA: our gaming boy had a succinct tweet about it:

And it's true, a lot of legit employees lost their jobs this week (I think their TV talkshow alone had 75) and it super sucks. But that show was produced with the staff being told it would air on A&E. When that was found out to be bullsh*t, management said that it would instead be on YouTube TV. THAT was a lie. They uploaded their videos to a basic free Youtube account and then paid for millions of fake views. It's absolutely wild.

Granted, as you said, I say this with empathy to the employees that actually worked hard for something like this. That's bananas.

I'm a fan of LA. Fun to spend a few days there and take a day trip to San Diego. Stayed right by Staples and was able to see one of Kobe's last games and then see the Bucks dismantle them the next year.

Been to LA multiple times. Never loved anything about it outside of the beach (Santa Monica). Downtown really stinks, imo. Beverly Hills, meh. Hollywood hills, meh. San Diego is a much better spot, imo. La Jolla Shores is one of my favorite communities in America.

The Theranos story is crack to me. I've watched and read it all...except the current trial! Which is wild, but have had so little time to keep up.

I'd move to SD if I could. Perfect weather, great area. Also super expensive unfortunately. I'd need to get a job there and make San Diego wages.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Chantix worked for me (on my 3rd try). The first time I had to stop taking it because of the dreams. They were like the bad dreams you've had your whole life except you don't wake up when you're supposed to. Brutal.

The side effects are real, but this time, they were minor and didn't affect me in any way really. I've been quit for a year (tomorrow) and I'm still taking it.

Also, if you do take it, make sure you take it on a full stomach. That warning is there for a reason.

California is becoming more and more expensive, so much that I wonder if it is worth it. I am a native San Diegan and live there now in a nicer community. I have a huge mortgage that limits what I do due to the amount I pay. Yes, there are a lot of things to enjoy for free or low cost. The beach, city golf courses, parks/hiking. Since the pandemic, more people have shown up (SF and LA folks notably, since the cost of living is even higher there), driving up traffic, rents, and home prices.

Cold turkey was the way for me. Had to take a couple days off work so people didn't have to deal with my cranky ass. Fifteen years this past August.

That's my problem. Some lady was being nice to me at the grocery store and I wanted to kill her :nonono:

Yeah, it sucks. Intellectually you recognize what's happening and why but there's just not a damn thing that will quench the hatred of all things.

Don't know if anybody else here has experienced it, but Bupropion (Wellbutrin) withdrawal was the same for me but like an order of magnitude greater. I would *not* recommend stopping that cold turkey.

My work uses 3 antimalware/virus programs (Windows/Symantec/SenseOn) on each PC. Along with the garbage Teams app, it has bogged down my work PC to a crawl. They refuse to acknowledge this is an issue.

I've been vaping for 5 years now and I absolutely love it.
But it's like going from driving a car to driving a bike, 9 out of 10 people dont like it.

First time I quit, I used patches and it helped with the cravings/irritability. Made it about a year.

Second, and last time, I got sick and didn’t feel like smoking that day. After making it 24 hours, I was like, well let’s see about two days. Then three. And so on and so on.

I haven’t smoked in 5.5 years. I still miss it, in a way, but I’ve never had the urge to pick it up again because I worked so hard to quit.

ETA: what also helped was seeing my uncle struggle with COPD and still smoke with it. In a weird way, COPD scared me more than cancer, and that was also a big motivator, not wanting to get it
