The Raptors were a 50-win/near 50-win team that had been to the playoffs for four straight years (including the ECF) BEFORE Kawhi got there. That demonstrates how close you have to be before you need a SUPERSTAR to get over the top. The Pistons aren't even remotely close to that level. Point being, and what I've said all along, is that there is no package available this year to make this team a true championship contender. And the risk of shooting your whole wad to get that supposed "win now" team this year is that if it doesn't result in a championship you're stuck on the treadmill because you've got no salary cap or assets left to improve further. It's one thing to lose in the playoffs year after year while making moves/improving slightly each year. It's not entertaining at all to watch the slow decline from conference finals loss to 2nd round loss to 1st round loss because there are no options available for getting better after shooting the wad to create the team that was only good enough to lose in the conference finals.
In this day and age where you're not seeing any 2004 Pistons "lightning in a bottle" teams but rather only superteams winning NBA championships, and you know you're going to have to beat superteams but don't have one yourself, I don't see the logic in going all in while using an "if this, if that, if the other thing happens" kicker to boot. The "look at such-and-such team; they sat on assets and waited too long" example doesn't apply here because the Pistons haven't tried sitting on assets in order to wait to make future moves yet.
Agree we're not on that level (Toronto pre KL or Boston)
We've also never collected assets like some teams.
I don't see us being a legit title contender in the forseeable future...and that's depressing and disappointing.
I'd rather go all in and fail than be stuck on this treadmill though. The Going to Work Pistons were a long **** time ago
