Heat championship ring on Pawn Stars

The owner started at $20,000 and would go no lower than 12,000 for it. But because it was a trainer's ring, Rick(the co-owner) wouldn't go any higher than 9,000. So was Rick right to not pay more than 9,000 for it?

I hope the trainer who sold that ring to the guy who brought it in to the Pawn shop was really hard-up. Otherwise he's an idiot.

Edit: At the end of the show, the owner came back and took the $9,000 offer. First time that's happened in the history of Pawn Stars, though its a not-common occurrence at the pawn shop.
