Travis D'Arnaud's potential

Post#1 » by Griff83 » Sun May 30, 2010 9:10 pm

Ive read many good things about him when we aquired him and lots of good things about him from recent reviews. I remember some Phillies fans saying that they actually thought D' Arnaud was the best prospect we got back in the deal just less advanced then Drabek/Taylor. I know Taylor was parlayed into Wallace but I'd say those two at the time were closely ranked. Here's a little excert from John Shonerd's chat on baseball america.

Eric P (Illinois): If you were looking for a catcher of the future, who would have the edge among Myers, Castro, Sanchez, D'Arnaud and Romine?

Jim Shonerd: I'm really intrigued by D'Arnaud's upside. Solid defensively with power, and he's hitting well in the Florida State League, a tough place to do it. Wouldn't mind Romine or Castro as a consolation prize. Need to see how Myers' defense comes along before committing to him as a catcher long-term.

Ive also read in other places where people think he has all star potential. Wondering to get Schad's or Meta4's view on D' Arnaud.

His upside is definitely as an All-Star catcher. Above-average hitter and defender; with power to boot.

I think that he's going to be major-league ready by his 23rd birthday, and he's going to be a damned fine player. Save perhaps patience (though he isn't horrible in that department) he has everything you could look for in a prospect...power, ability to make contact, defensive prowess, and the swing to make it all work (note that I've seen video of precisely three of his at-bats, but they looked pretty sexy).

Joe Mauer he ain't, but I can see him putting up an OPS in the .800-.825 range on a consistent basis, and that puts him in rare company at his position.

I'll say I've seen about a few of his at bats, but from what I saw, this kid may just be the best prospect in the Jays system, other than maybe Brett Wallace.

His bat, defence, arm and his swing/contact are all well above average and it's just up to him now.

If I had to compare him to a player today, someone like Brian McCann..maybe a little less power and a little better batting average.

Can you link this? I've got insider, but I can't seem to find it. The story I see is by Kevin Goldstein on JP Arencibia.

So how far apart are D'Arnaud and Arencibia? I read that article about JP and he sounded legit. Who is our catcher of the future?

d'Arnaud is a better prospect than Arenciabia; but he is in high A right now and is probably at least 2 years away.
