The Miami Heat have traded the 18th & Daequan Cook

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Wed Jun 23, 2010 11:10 pm

The Heat have reportedly traded Daequan Cook and the No. 18 pick to the Thunder for the No. 32 pick.

The Miami Heat have traded the 18th pick in Thursday's NBA draft and guard Daequan Cook to Oklahoma City for the Thunder's 32nd pick, a league source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher.

Miami creates more space to pursue talent during free agency, but it was bound to happen, so it makes me happy to know they won't have a first round pick Thursday.

Creating more three max space for the Heat and OKC getting a chance at adding two bigs to their frontcourt.....I fail to see how this makes you happy. :-?

The Heat are going to improve their core. I just hope the added cap room doesn't result in them getting Lebron. I'm hopeful that egos get in the way and the Heat wind up with Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudemire (or Carlos Boozer) rather than LeBron and Bosh to go with Wade. I can see competing with Wade, Joe, and Amare, but I don't see hope against Wade, LeBron, and Bosh.

I think Miami is down to 2 signed players now (and they still may deal Beasley), it's possible that all 4 of Miami's 2nd round picks make the roster. I'm just saying that after 3 max contracts the rest of the team will likely be all minimums.

I already expected Miami to make adjustments to their team to add max free agent(s). It's no secret that they intend to sign one or two max free agents. I expect Michael Beasley to be traded as well. I can only smile about them not having a first round pick this year, but the off-season will be depressing if they end up with Lebron (like Dallas pointed out).

Miami is a major concern but regardless, depending on whether or not OKC trades down with all their picks I see them playing this year's Minnesota and picking up all the depth in the frontcourt from the draft.

I see OKC trying to moving up to the lottery to add 1 key player. The rumor I heard was 18 & 21 + Eric Maynor to Indy for the 10th pick. Seems like a lot to give up to get 10, but maybe they have a specific target like Udoh or Aldrich with that pick. If they stand pat with the 3 later picks I think they can shotgun approach and go more developmental. It's easier to go Euro-stash if you have extra picks like they do.

OKC is probably giving up too much, but they need to focus on what puts them in the best position to win now, and add to their 50 win season. With 50 wins they managed to be the 8th seed only because teams like Houston and New Orleans dealt with injuries. The competition will be even more difficult next season if the major contenders stay healthy, so I believe it's wise for them to make a move like this, and to give up the mid/late first round picks.

I wonder what Sam Presti thinks about Byron Mullens? If he moves the picks he must feel good about the way his young players are developing and what they can provide the team during the future. I say they should just play their cards and move up to draft a player that has a greater chance to be successful.
