James Jones?

Miami is close to buying out James Jones. He can sign anywhere cheap because he'll already have his money. Should we be driving to convince James to sign here in July? When healthy he's a 40% 3 point shooter. Surely, there is room for that skill set, right?

I'd like to see what he's asking for 1st. The guarantees in his contract are like $2 mil/year for the next 2-3 years. If MIA is trying to buy him out, then they might be offering more up front $$ so that he can hit the market in an attempt to make more $$ then he would if they were still paying the 1st $2 mil of his contract. IOW, If he doesn't take a buyout and signs somewhere for $3 mil for the next 3 years, then he only makes $9 million over the 3 years; if he does take the buyout and signs for the same amount, then he makes the buyout + the contract.

BTW, I'm assuming cutting a player works the same way as in MLB where the player can't draw more $$ than any single contract states (so if he signs somewhere for $10 mil, but is cut and signs somewhere else for $3 mil, then he still only makes $10 mil - $3 mil from his new team and $7 mil from his old). This may not be correct. I know that buying out a player means that the player is freed from any restrictions that would have otherwise been in place though...
