Somebody tell me about Sy...

Post#1 » by parson » Fri Jun 25, 2010 3:49 am

... DraftExpress has a page that lists him as 6' 10", 220lbs., with a 7' 1" wingspan and a 8' 11.75" standing reach. Another page (STILL on DE, however) has him as 6'6" and says, "This player does not currently have a completed profile or player blog entries."

And I found a blogger who says he's 6'3".

Judging by ESPN's short video, I'd say he's closer to 6'6" with loooong arms. Anybody know him?

Givony said he isn't in their database and Chad Ford said he's the ultimate sleeper. He apparently averaged 6 ppg on a horrible team but impressed Sund enough in workouts to draft him.

Sund has a thing for 7 footers and french players so this really isn't a surprise.

Thanks. I was about to delete my post when I found some info on the draft thread. Not much information to go on, huh?

With Gladyr and Sy, we're starting to get a cache of shooters in Europe. Maybe we will be able to cash them in eventually...

So today, the AJC said he's 6'7" and then added, "Drew said he thinks Sy is long enough to play center as well as power forward." http://blogs.ajc.com/hawks/2010/06/25/a ... logs_hawks

What gives?

Should I assume that he's a Boris Diaw clone?

You coulda gone all day without saying that.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

I hope he plays summer league this year, so we can see a little of him, but I do expect him to be a stash player for a couple years. Since I still can't recall one of our stash players coming over to play her we'll see.

The right part is that he's certainly 6'7' with shoes.
The wrong part is that he can play C or PF. I don't know how such a conclusion can be made.

Here is some of the few video you can get online : http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcfgyj ... iers_sport
He's number 10, with an assist at 36", then a 3pts play, and a dunk at 1'15"

Anybody else notice that quote was changed to :
Drew said he thinks Sy is long enough to play center as well as power forward can play both the wing and power forward.
With a line through the small print (I couldn't show the scratched-out part any other way.)

Now it makes more sense. He's a long-armed forward.

Pape Sy is long, but not long enough to play the 5 at a high level. He has the length to excel if he puts in the work and sets goals for himself. I expect him to be more of a 3/4, more so a 4, but it depends on how well his game develops.

According to lnb.fr he played SG/SF during 07-08 season, then PG-SF during 08-09 season, and again SG.SF this year. Two years ago, he played both guards positions with the junior french team.

A 1988 guy. This could explain why he played sporadically with french junior team. This is the best young team ever in France with Batum (playing the same post and known for a long time to be the best prospect of the generation), Antoine Diot (1989, playing with the 88, at PG), Edwin Jackson (1989, playing with the 88, at SG), Abdoulaye M'Baye (SG)... This generation is two times European champions and bronze medal at WC (losing in semi against usa, Stephen Curry, Michael Beasley, Donte Green, John Flynn, DeAndre Jordan...). And in other occasions, with the older or the younger generation, he never found his place, with Nando De Colo (87) or Thomas Heurtel (89) in the team. All of them are drafted or to be draft. Rodrigue Beaubois was exactly in the same position: 88, again, and never played with the final junior roster.

Some news today on website of "L'Equipe".
He confirms that ATL told him they would pick him at 53th and tried to hide it.

which means:
"In my mind, I was coming here to live an experience. Then everything happened very quickly"
Pape Sy is very proud of being picked in the 2010 NBA Draft.
Asked in L'Equipe on Saturday, the SG-PG of Le Havre (22 yrs old, 6' 5.5") was expecting to be selected by Atlanta with the 53rd pick. Hawks' staff, impressed by his athletic skills during a workout in June, had given him reason to hope. He said that "They have suggested they would select me in the second round but that I should not tell it to anybody".

The staff actually looks ready to give him a chance at PG. His dream to play in the most prestigious league begins to take shape: "They said they were clearly interested in me. There are available spots in the roster. It's becoming more and more real".

I've revised my expectations for Pape Sy. Given what I have heard about his size and athleticism, why can't he take the spot that Mario West has been holding this year? They will still probably stash him in Europe but why not? Mario gives supreme effort on D but has proven hopeless on the offensive end. Sy is raw, but given his stats in limited time I still feel better about him hitting an open jumper than Mario.

If nothing else I would hope that got performance in Summer League might get him over quicker rather than later.

I hope he does join our Summer League team so you and the rest of the Hawk fans can watch him play. I have seen him play and that's why I was high on him, but I even need to see him more. I was absolutely thrilled that we got him with a late second.
