How soon can players be traded?

Post#1 » by clydewally » Thu Jul 22, 2010 9:40 pm

There is a lot of confusion on the Knicks board over how soon they can trade recently signed free agents like Felton or recentlly traded for players such as Randolph in a package for Paul.

On the trade front, this was cut and pasted from the CBA and seems to suggest that the Knicks would not have to wait two months to trade the former Golden State players because the 60 day restriction only applies to teams over the cap. Is this true?

For two months after receiving the player in trade or claiming him off waivers, if the player is being traded in combination with other players. However, the team is free to trade the player by himself (not packaged with other players) immediately. This restriction applies only to teams over the salary cap. (Also see question number 75 for a special case where players can be traded together in less than two months.)

Also, is there a waiting period for trading a recently signed free agent like Felton. The above paragraph seems to deal only with traded or waived players.

Latest reports suggest that the Knicks are not over the cap, therefore the above provision re: trades does not apply to them. They can re-trade any player acquired by trade immediately, if they want to.

As for Felton, he was signed to a contract and cannot be traded until 3 months from the date of signing, or December 15th, whichever is later. (In Felton's specific case, that'd be December 15th.)

Didn't want to start a new topic, but have a question.

Raptors just newly acquired David Andersen for a 2.5mil TPE and a 2nd rounder. When is the earliest he can be traded - as a package or 1 for 1? Still the 60 days or Dec 15th? Does it matter that he was absorbed through the TPE? Thanks.

I'm no expert but I believe it goes like this...

When is the earliest he can be traded - as a package or 1 for 1?

He can be traded by himself right away. In a package, not for two months. Of course, teams can sometimes configure package deals as a series of smaller deals, so it's possible he could be traded with other players in less than two months.

Still the 60 days or Dec 15th?

Dec. 15th is the date recently signed free agents can be traded (if it is more than 3 months after the player was signed), and isn't related to trades.

Does it matter that he was absorbed through the TPE?

Nope.

Also, he can't be traded back to Houston until after June 30 of next year.

Here's a good recap of when a player can/can't be traded:
