Sign a vet minimum player or trade for talent?

Should the Nets sign a forward for the vet minimum?
Especially with Brook slowly recovering from mono they could use some beef in the frontcourt.
He doesn't have great stats but Etan Thomas stands out since he can play power forward or center. After that there's Joe Smith///Josh Boone///
Are there any other free agent power forwards available the Nets should look at?

As far as trades, the team wants to keep flexibility and cap room for next summer.
If Joe Dumars will trade with us send Quinton Ross or a second round pick for Chris Wilcox.

I would be fine with Thomas on a 1 year deal for on the cheap. I still want Favors to start and let Hump and Thomas battle for the backup min.

Also if someone goes down (Favors, Hump, Petro, Lopez) we will need someone who can step in and play some min until they recover. I guess Zoubek can do that at C but we really don't want to rely on James to be the backup PF full time (he will be playing spot min when the matchup is right) so having Etan there will be insurance at least and he's not taking time away from Favors (maybe Hump if he can still play) so there's really no risk.

Thomas can play both spots and was always a solid defender/rebounder so why not give him a shot unless we wanted to go Tim Thomas but he is similar to DJ and I'm really not trying bring in someone that does similar things as one of our young players we want to get time.

Ok I'm going to change my mind about Etan and move him into my #2 spot. What do you guys think about this guy. He is coming off surgery but is still young and has some upside. As I said previously I still want Favors to start because anyone we bring in is not going to be better so here's my choice.

Ike Diogu - Diogu missed last season after microfracture surgery on his knee. Because of that, and because of his limited minutes on his rookie contract, Diogu has become overlooked by media and executives alike. But even if he's not the smartest sausage in the world, Diogu can play. His career PER is 16.1; his career TS% is .577%. Injuries and lack of opportunity have defined his career, yet Diogu is a good and efficient interior scorer (17.7pp36m career) who has become much overlooked. Unless it's due to the knee injury, there's no reason why Ike Diogu should not be in the NBA next season.

I'm hoping he can push Hump out and become the backup to Favors, thoughts?

Same. At this point we might as well get Boone back because we atleast know he can produce.

So he's a terrible FT shooter.. and?... It's not like he'll be playing 30+ min anymore, nor will he be closing out games.

He's a good rebounder and an underrated finisher, he's also a great locker room guy that won't complain about minutes. He'd be the ideal 3rd big man off the bench.

Forget him shooting airballs at the free throw line you said he's an underrated finisher.
He's not. How many times did I yell at the TV "dunk the ball!" He lacks a vertical.

Does seem like a nice guy though...

I didn't say he was Dwight howard.. but he's a lot better than most give him credit for, he finished at a decent rate and always seems to be in position for the pass and get the offenseive rebound/tip it in. Again, he would be getting 5-8 minutes per game at most. Not sure what else you'd want from the 11th man on the roster.

Boone never got any better the team should move on.
I wish him luck hope he lands another job. As a matter of fact the Hawks are interested.

"The Hawks still are in the market for a center (I’ve still heard nothing to indicate they are seeking a wing) and they have veterans Francisco Elson, Brian Skinner and Josh Boone on their radar. Not so much Kwame Brown, who is thought to still be seeking a deal for more than the vet minimum."
