DJ Mbenga a possibility?

Post#1 » by cagney » Sat Aug 28, 2010 10:29 pm

Just curious what everyone thinks about signing him as a free agent to the minimum. He is a beast and though not super great, isnt he like 7-1 280? and a black belt to the 10000 degree? He could def help against bigger centers like howard and bynum, even paired with asik if hes as mobile as ive heard. I know we have 5 bigs but I wouldnt mind him pine-ridin. better and bigger than chris richard. and a trading piece at the deadline

Possibility of sucking. No need either, Noah-Thomas-Asik. He would be redundant.

His minimum salary would be quite large and I would think we'd want as much cap flexibility as possible for a deadline deal. I think our 13th man will be someone who we can pay the rookie minimum and have it fully unguaranteed (up to Jan 10th obviously). Probably will also be a guard, not a big man.

im not the best at salaries but can we do him and say john lucas III? I thought the vet min dont count against the cap or is it just when caps full you can sign vet mins but until then it counts against?

Or we sign him for the minimum, then promote a JJ vs. Mbenga MMA match. I'd pay to see that.

It still counts against the cap the full amount. The league pays the difference (as long as you pay them the full amount of their salary) and you are allowed to go over the cap to do so, but it still counts against the cap.

We could fit both, but later in the season, say if someone like Rudy was available we'd have less space to absorb the salary and would have to match it with comparable salaries.

He does nothing besides provide comedy relief for this message board.. Thus signing him is a must.

This is incorrect. Rookie min and 15 year vet min count the same against the cap:

When a player has been in the NBA for three or more seasons, and is playing under a one-year, ten-day or rest-of-season contract, the league actually reimburses the team for part of his salary - any amount above the minimum salary level for a two-year veteran. For example, in 2005-06 the minimum salary for a two-year veteran is $719,373, so for a ten-year veteran, with a minimum salary of $1,138,500, the league would reimburse the team $419,127. Only the two-year minimum salary is included in the team salary, not the player's full salary. They do this so teams won't shy away from signing older veterans simply because they are more expensive when filling out their last few roster spots.

Nah, we don't need him. We have Kurt Thomas who can do everything that he can. But DJ can come if he brings tacos. :)

Nope. There's nothing on this team that he can bring. We already have a nice frontcourt rotation of Noah/Boozer/Taj/Asik/Thomas. There's no room nor a need for a 6th big. Id much rather we sign another guard that can shoot. Give me Lucas and I'd be content.

I will not mind bring one more big man sitting on the bench he'll be good for six fouls and he is a big body I will not bring him in. While I do like to bring one more big man that can stretch the floor or at least a big man with body good for six fouls if needed.

Why the F would I sign a thug with no requisite basketball skill when guys like James Singleton still exist on the market?
