NBA Expands Technical Fouls For 'Overt' Player Reactions To Calls

Amare allways had a problem with letting the refs know when he got fouled, even when it was justified. This new rule seems to basically say shut up and play or get a T. I'm wondering how Stat will manage; will he set a new record for all time techs or will he grow up and close his trap?

Make your predictions here!

Regular season 82 games. Im guessing he gets 27 techs total, even while trying to bite his tongue he seems to lose control and has to let the refs know he got fouled.

I dont see the point in this new rule. It's not like the player's are personally insulting or offending the umpire.

How does this change the game for the better? It doesn't. It's only going to cause controversy.

I seriously wonder if David Stern has run out of things to do.

This will not impact the "And-1" type situations.

It is meant to T-up people who complain after a call all the way down to people who simply approach a ref to say "Hey, he's hacking me every time".

It's still BS, to be sure, but if they T'd up players everytime they drove the lane and played up theatrics.. it would be hysterical.

This isn't going to change a thing, players like kobe and lebron will still get to eat out the refs ears while everyone else gets T'ed for overt reactions.

this is just another way for the NBa to get more money from the players. I dont like rules that takes away accountability from the refs.

To be honest, this rule change would only affect the minority of NBA players. Most NBA players aren't rich enough or want to waste money on getting T'd up. It's really only the Kobe's and the Lebron's and the usual suspects (Perkins, Dwight, etc etc) that will be penalized the most from this rule change.

This rule is going to get way out of hand. When a player doesn't get T'd up for jawing, another player could potentially complain why he didn't get T'd up and then get T'd up for asking about that...an endless downward spiral.

Kobe is going to set a record if anything. The bullet points outlined in the ESPN article are EXACTLY what he does. EXACTLY.

If it's enforced, he'll have to stop acting like the 5 year old child he is. Swinging his arms around, yelling after getting up from the ground, running to the ref and trying to plead his case then walking away with that smarmy douche smile.

This is great because I felt the refs didn't have enough of a role in the game. This will make them stand out more and have more control of the outcome, which is something sorely lacking for those diehard NBA fans who don't like to see the game played without excess free throws, game stoppage and referee involvement.

Stern is definitely in touch with his fan base.

I think they are doing this to cut down on the profanity as well. You can't watch a TV game w/o hearing a couple 'plain as day' F-Bombs. They have snuck their way onto society's tolerated list.

Edited out a jab ...

"The rule is intended to prevent excessive complaining from players.

When players demonstratively throw their hands in the air or demonstrate how he was fouled by hitting his own arm, a technical will be issued."

It's just stupid.

They should focus on players who flop/shout on the front-end when there isn't a legitimate foul before they focus on players who take issue with the lack of a call when there is a legitimate foul.

Never have i heard about a job where an employee was above reproach for their actions, or lack thereof. Stern is making these refs untouchable.

"We're going to expand the universe of unsportsmanlike actions that will be penalized,'' NBA vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson said Friday. "They will include air-punching at an official. Waving him off as a sign of disrespect. Running up to an official from across the court to voice a complaint. Flailing arms in disbelief. Jumping up and down and pirouetting in disbelief or clapping sarcastically at an official. Those are some of the types of actions that really have no place in our game."
