I was there and standing at the top of the cliff and saw him, let the man have a vacation, everyone was trying to talk to him. He made two little kids cry, pretty sad.

He just snubbed them when they went and talked to him and I guess he wasn't nice about it. I had to tell them that most stars are like that when they are not in basketball mode.

I met John Stockton once at my high school where his kid was playing a game and he was the same way. They were just really upset because he is there favorite.

stockton had a contract with a basketball card company that limited him giving out his autograph. and one time in the beginning of his career, some lady took advantage of his humble, naive nature and sold his autograph. he got busted by his contract. so since then, he kept away from the fans whenever he wasn't required too.

i say, if you go into a public place, wearing pretty much the same uniform that makes you famous (lets face it, swimming trunks is not that different from a basketball jersey), dont get grumpy when somebody recognizes you and wants to chat it up. sand hollow is not exactly a desolate rec area. and summertime is not exactly a slow time of year for it. if you see a celeb/athlete in such an area, it's cuz they expect and want to be recognized.

I couldn't disagree more. If twitter has taught us anything, it's that NBA players like doing a lot of the same stuff that non-NBA players their age like to do.

I don't think it's too much to ask for people to give them their space and treat them as they would a normal human being.

nba players have twitters because they want people to know what they are doing. THEY WANT PEOPLE! all im sayin, is if you are a popular figure, and you go out in public in plain view, don't be a douche when somebody wants to talk to you.

twz shows celebrities get angry because they are covered in hats, sunglasses, and baggy clothes. they obviously dont want to be recognized. then there is an obnoxious stranger who is trying to sell their image asking personal questions about their life. this vid showed none of that.

now im not sure how much im willing to believe that deron is a jerk. it could be that somebody was just extra sensitive. but i saw the video. if he wanted a private vacation, he wouldn't be doing back-flips off a crowded cliff with dozens of people watching, at a crowded rec area, during its busy time of year.

it is silly to assume he wanted privacy in such a setting.

Privacy matters aside, those are some hideous shorts he had on.

I know. A guy making 12MM+ should have better looking shorts on. Was he there by himself? He must have had someone with him there, right?

Obviously he is looking for attention. After all, he is cliff jumping without his floppy hat, sunglasses, and frumpy clothing. ;)

Honestly I find it pretty classless when players brush off fans in off court situations. Who cares if a fan wants to come over and say hello or talk for a couple minutes. I think that with all the money they have that they could afford to take a few seconds of minutes out of their lives to talk to a fan.

I once saw Ronnie Price down at the gateway and I went over and said hello and he was really cool about, I left him alone after saying hello and that was that. If I would have gone over to say hello and he just ignored me or told me to get lost I would have been pretty upset/bummed out. I have a lot of respect for players who actually take the time to talk to fans who approach them. It's hard enough to work up the guts to go over and say something to one of your heroes and if they got mad at you or ignored you it would be pretty rough and personally I would lose a lot of respect for them.

Also, when Stockton was at the game for the LHM halftime deal I went over and shook his hand and talked to him for a bit after the game and he was very nice and cool about it so I have a hard time believing he was short/rude with fans. Maybe when he was playing he was different but I didn't have a problem with him.

All the players, not just Deron should be friendly with fans if they come up and want to say something to them. I hope they understand that most of fans that come up to them will never get another chance in their lives to meet an NBA player or one of their heroes. Heck, they could even change their lives by just saying hello. I just don't get the whole being rude thing....I mean if the fan is wanting to sit down and have an hour long conversation then that is different but what is the harm in saying hello and talking for a couple minutes?

The difference is that some people don't know when to say when. They want to occupy the player's entire time. Players are people too. They have bad days and want to be left alone sometimes. You think it is only a quick 5 minutes. You have to figure that almost the entire population of Utah is jazz fans and most would recognize Deron. All those 5 minutes every time he goes out add up. That is every where he goes too... the store, the gas station, the movies... EVERYWHERE.

I have a bit more sympathy after being a blonde American in Korea and walking past a junior high school. Everyone wanted to come and speak some english and shake your hand. It was fine until once the crowd saw you were open to it, literally DOZENS of kids all pressed in. Then they wanted you to sign a paper--then they wanted you to write their name in english--then they wanted.....it goes on and on. We had to finally just wave goodbye and break away from the crowd--we were on our way to an appointment after all. Then you learn to avoid places like that because people tend to take advantage of your presence without being considerate of you. In my brushes with celebrities now, I note their presence but leave them to what they are doing.

So take 5 minutes to say hello to each person and kindly tell them that you have somewhere to go or something to do and I'm sure they would understand. Utah is pretty well known for letting "stars" do their own thing without bugging them much so I'm pretty sure if someone like Deron kindly told them that he had to go do some things that they would leave him alone after saying hello.

I dunno, I've met a few different players and luckily all of them have been really cool about it and I will always remember meeting them because of how they acted. If I went to meet Deron or to just say hello and he was a total D-bag about it I would be pretty devastated since he is my idol...I dunno, just saying it shouldn't be that hard to be kind to fans while you are out and about. It comes with the territory after all...if he didn't want to be bugged than he shouldn't have gone out in the first place.
