Devin Harris

Post#1 » by shrink » Sat Sep 25, 2010 6:14 pm

The Melo deal seems to be breaking down, and one of the factors may be that CHA is unwilling to sling a PG back to NJN, in DJ Augustin.

Here's my unusual question:

Would you trade Corey Brewer + Luke Ridnour for Devin Harris as a value play?

Devin Harris is an ex-All Star makes about $9 mil/yr for the next three yrs. I assume we'd try to move him again at the trade deadline.

MIN also could get in this trade with its cap space, which I think DEN or UTA would love to get,,

hell yes, I might even move Flynn if we could get T Will back

Why not just keep him, he's immediately our best PG or best SG the second he gets here

How would a Rubio-Harris backcourt be? Good defense and playmaking, but a little rough on the shooting.

So you would trade more assets for Devin Harris and try to retrade him at the trade deadline, but you wouldn't take the much better player in Chauncey Billups for less assets and retrade him at the trade deadline?

Color me confused. But my answer is no, Harris is a loser who puts up good stats. Not someone I want running the Wolves and "teaching" the young kids how to lose.

Lots of things going on here.

First, I don't consider Luke Ridnour an asset at that price-tag in either trade, and I'm not sure we'll be paying to keep Corey Brewer in 2011, so his value as an asset to us is minimized. I certainly think Brewer is worth less than the additional $9 mil in cap space. In this trade, we also hang onto our cap space.

Second, Devin Harris is 27 and on a $9 mil contract. I think he's more marketable to more teams than the 33 year old Billups making $13.

Third, I also think we're in a safer position if we weren't able to trade our new acquisition. Harris seems to fit better with the Wolves to me than Billups (and gives us more trade leverage). I think Harris' contract is reasonable, so the extra years don't scare me.

Fourth though, I think all these deals are mostly fair value. I can't tell you for sure that the cap space is worth more to a third team than Billups, or that Devin Harris is certainly worth more than this offer. When I post a trade on the MIN board, its generally because I DON'T know if I would do a certain deal, and I want some perspective from MIN fans

Finally, I kind of liked the Billups trade as an interesting idea. I'd be worried about Billups as a hot potato, but I certainly agree that DEN would take raw cap space for Billups (and might even give up an asset). With the teams rumored to be involved in the Melo deal, it looks like the Nuggets will be getting assets and not cap relief. The Kroenke's may be richer than snot, but all $13 mil of Billups salary is over the lux. He might be worth $13 mil, but he's certainly not worth $29 mil to the Melo-less Nuggets next year.

If that's all it took then it seems like a no brainer... How would the rest of the trade breakdown? Would we be sending something (like cap space) to Denver b/c it seems like we're just sucking value out of the deal.

I'm in the Devin Harris is not very good camp. He's a poor shooter and below average facilitator. He would not look good in our offense, which means the longer he stays here the worse his trade value would get. I think it would have to be a three team deal from the get go.

I dunno. I think he could look decent. He is a very good defender which would help us out. Also, he is a way to consolidate assets. I think it also puts more value into the PG spot. His TS is almost 52 which is good for a guard. He also has a nice ft/fg rate. He is athletic and a good kid. The wisc swing has some similar spacing and off-ball movements as our offense and we know he did well in that.

The concern clearly would be usage and the jumper. But I think the value would be there. That being said, i do not think Brewer+Ridnour+cap gets Harris.

Johnny Flynn and Ramon SessionsTS%'s were 51% last year.

Ridnour had a 56.7% TS% last year.

Ridnour had a great shooting year. Uncharacteristic of him.

Sessions only takes the shots he is good at. He avoids the outside shot which hurts him.
Harris still takes the outside shot but still had a decent TS. I said it is "good" not that he is Jordan.

Flynn's TS is not the reason we might not like his performance last year.

I'll go ahead and say that 52TS% is not very good for a guard. It's actually quite terrible. We'll just have to disagree there. You forget that Sessions is also a very poor FT%.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinge ... hootingPct

Harris was 46th among PG's last year in TS%. Just a hair above TJ Ford (by .05%) -- perhaps known as the worst shooting PG in the NBA?

ha! Brain fart. I flip-flopped TS% and EFG.

You are correct sir. Harris' 43% EFG proves that point. For some reason when I read it I was picturing a EFG of 52 and that would be very good for a guard.

My bad.

No Harris ... this would be a very debateable move at a time when we need to build some chemistry. He clearly is not a player that can elevate the play of this team right now.

Nice catch Biff -- you're right. We'd have to wait until December 15th since we signed him as a free agent.

No more Ridnour trades. I wonder what extra value we'd get if we used Flynn?

Seems like Flynn's value is more likely to go up than down. We might be able to get something good for him now, but if we were going to move him we'd be better off doing it later. Also, he seems like the kind of guy that people really like. We'd probably want to take really good stock of how trading him would affect the very fragile chemistry that this young, playful, optimistic team has.

We will not make a big move until the deadline. That way we can gauge who is a good fit here and who should move.
