Head-to-head newb, need roster advice

Post#1 » by Bugaloo » Wed Nov 3, 2010 3:16 pm

I'm in a 10-team head-to-head league and had never been in a H2H or rotisserie league, so I ended up drafting an unbalanced roster. That also means some of my questions might seem too simple.

Roster Size: 13
Roster Positions: PG, G, SG, SF, F, PF, C, UTIL, UTIL, UTIL
Categories: PTS, REB, AST, STL, BLK, TO, FG%, FT%, 3PTM

My roster:
John Wall (PG)
Rodney Stuckey (PG-SG)
Jarrett Jack (PG-SG)
Stephen Jackson (SG-SF)
Terrence Williams (SG-SF)
Gerald Wallace (SF-PF)
Josh Smith (PF-SF)
Lamar Odom (PF-SF)
Dwight Howard (C)
Ben Gordon (SG)
Kevin Love (PF)
Andrew Bogut (C)
Andris Biedrins (C)

Even though it's H2H, I've looked at the league-wide categorical rankings to see how I'm doing comparatively. Not surprisingly, I have the most rebounding in my league by a huge margin and probably need to find a way to turn some of that rebounding into something else. So far I'm leading my league in REB, BLK, and FG%, and I'm 4th-5th in PTS, AST, and STL. I'm dead last in FT% and near the bottom in 3PM.

Barring a massive overhaul, my bread and butter is the Dwight categories (REB, BLK, FG%), and I should be trying to shore up PTS, AST, and STL while punting FT% and 3PM, right? Based on that strategy, who is most expendable to me (bigs?), and what specific players should I be looking to acquire or trade based on those parameters (particularly guards...outside of Wall, I'm not sure what to do with my guards)? As long as I have Howard, Smith, and Wallace, should I not worry about covering REB and BLK in other spots?

Also, any suggestions on who I should consider waiving/picking up? For example, should I consider dropping Jack and adding Calderon? I know Jack is starting, but they're getting similar minutes, and Calderon should trump Jack in FG% and AST.

Sorry for the long post. I know it's a lot to digest, but any feedback from you fantasy veterans is appreciated.

You have the right idea on what to do here. Since it's head to head it's ok to punt a category. If you were in a Roto league then you would probably be in pretty bad shape.

To be honest your steals should be ok with guys like J.Smith, Wallace, Stuckey, Jackson. I would be more worried about assists. I think if you can somehow nab a premier point guard then you would be in good shape. Someone like Rondo or Kidd would be beautiful since they can carry you in assists and steals. Try to throw out some 2 for 1 trades and target guys in that mold.

As for the waiver wire, it all depends on who is available. I wouldn't drop Jack for Calderon, but Jack is your most droppable player and it's a 10 team league so I'm sure waivers could be deep.

You should target trading Wallace or Josh Smith, as they are both roto kings and should fetch a premium. Both are bottom 1st, top 2nd round type talents, so I'd go for a Nash/Rondo/Rose/Westbrook type and see if I could get someone to bite. I agree with fantasymvp, punt 3ptm and don't worry about FT% - with Howard you are screwed unless you decide to deal him.

since you're punting 3's, a cheaper solution you may not have to over-pay for is Andre Miller for assists. He's not bad in terms of FG% and will help a bit in steals. I would still look for a 3rd PG to give more assists though. If you can get one of those star guys mentioned..then go for that, since they'll give you more points as well.

I appreciate the advice, especially the player suggestions. That's what I was really looking to get.

I would love to get Rondo, but I can't imagine getting him at a reasonable price right now, given his assist tear to start the season...same with Rose peeling off points like no one's business. With guys like Kidd (3PM, REB), Nash (FT%, 3PM), and Westbrook (REB), I worry about paying premiums on those players that are based largely on categories that I don't need, either b/c I'm really strong (REB) or am punting (3PM, FT%). I really like the Miller suggestion. He seems like someone I can get in a reasonable deal, without paying a premium for categories I don't need.

What do you guys think about Biedrins, given the rest of my roster and its strength w/respect to REB, BLK, and FG%? I drafted him in the 12th round of a 13-round, 10-team draft, and his production so far has been similar to what it was last year (instead of the seasons prior to that), so I don't see him having much trade value. Should I just drop him and get a PG off waivers? I hesitate partly because I see that he's 86.1% owned in ESPN leagues, yet I can't imagine getting anything more than a borderline player in a trade.

Thanks again for the advice!

What I usually do is target teams that are losing (because they'll want to change up their team) or teams that have a need for the position you're trading away.

It would help if you listed some of the top FA's.

You can also try doing 2 for 1's and picking up someone from the waivers. In a 10 team, 13 roster league, there's bound to be some decent pick-ups available. To remain inconspicuous, what you can do is offer a two for two..you trade two mediocre players for one good player and a bad player. Then drop the bad player for the player you want to pick up. If you're league is good though, it'll be harder to find a bad player on a roster given your league size.

I'm not sure how the rosters look in a league like yours, but there's no harm in asking around..especially with teams in need of C's.

Calderon, Ridnour (and Flynn), George Hill, Hinrich, Boobie Gibson, and Toney Douglas are among the FA PGs available in my league. I was thinking about dropping Biedrins and picking up Calderon or Ridnour to boost my assists since I don't really need Biedrins' blocks or rebounds (and guys like Tyson Chandler, whose production is comparable to Biedrins', have been FAs all season).

Guys like Diaw, Kleiza, Morrow, and Afflalo are also FAs, just to give you an idea of what the FA pool is like. There seems to be some good owners, but a few certainly aren't making the most of their rosters.
