Jays trying to go for it next year according to Bob Elliot

Post#1 » by darth_federer » Sun Dec 5, 2010 7:20 am

We’re hearing from baseball people that the Jays think they need “one more big piece” to make a run at the American League East title next season.

In earlier talks with clubs the Jays expressed the feeling that the New York Yankees might not be as strong next season — if they don’t land Cliff Lee.

The Jays have also said that the Tampa Bay Rays could back up somewhat with the loss of Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena.

And the Jays didn’t think the Boston Red Sox were as strong as they were this season, although this was before the Red Sox agreed to a deal in principle to acquire slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez from the San Diego Padres on Saturday.

The Jays have been the most aggressive dialing the 816 area code.

This seems to be against everything AA said he would do. Then again, it is Bob Elliot who is a reliable source for these kinds of things. There are still way too many question marks for them to go for it IMO. It could just be baseball people speculating.

too bad Yankees, BSox, and now Rays are going for it every season. BSox and Yankees are improving and Rays are going stock up with more prospects.

AA needs to find some pieces to be a contender, and if he is going for it this coming season. Jays have 4 good starters, getting Greinke is kinda risky and unknown how he'll perform. Same goes with if Manny signs here. There are much sure-things in FA, other than Gonzalez, Lee, Crawford, but they are out of Jays' reach. I think it's best to stay on course for contending in 2012 where there may be an extra wildcard slot.

Seeing as how 816 is Kansas city that would mean Grienke. If we got him, do we have the bats/bullpen to contend this year? I just don't see it.

I don't see why not. The only major hole we have is at 3rd base and you can always expect surprises from the bullpen. We don't necessarily need to sign a bunch of veteran relievers that will costs millions.

Bad move AA. The key to do well with the Jays is to play out those years before you're supposed to compete.

Too many questions. Bullpen is a unknown right now and they cant depend on their bats just yet. What are you getting out of Hill and Lind? Is Wells going to have a similar season? What about Baustista (was he a fluke or is he legit?)

What about the vacancy at first base?

They need a year more to get these things right before they should make a move. Making sure that Lee and Crawford dont end up in the AL East would be big.

Considering they just traded one of their better starters for a prospect, I'm not sure if Elliott's reporting is correct here.

I agree, sounds like he was given some bad information.

I have long wondered if Bob Elliott is anymore in the "know" than you or I.

With us dealing Marcum, I think its safe to say he was fed wrong information.
