Chad Ford: 50%+ Mayo is Traded

Post#1 » by shrink » Thu Dec 9, 2010 4:17 pm

basko1 from RubeChat noted this from Ford's chat:

Steven (Memphis)
What's the likelihood of Randolph and Mayo being moved by the Grizz this season, considering how disappointing the start to their season has been.

Chad Ford
Both pretty likely if this continues. Michael Heisley came into the season pretty sure he had a playoff contender on his hands. He just extended Gay and Conley and he can't afford to let Marc Gasol go. And Xavier Henry's played well for them. I think Mayo and Randolph have a better than 50 percent chance of being moved by February.

Are we interested? What do you think we'd have to offer?

Their pick back for starters.

Other than that, I don't know what their needs are, but we will have to shed a wing player.

This is tough. He seems like someone who would be a very good 4th or 5th option on a good team. He's a great shooter and knows how to play although the Memphis fans seem to think he's horrific on the defensive end.

My main concern is that while his best fit is a 4th or 5th option, he still thinks of himself as a number 1 or 2 option which could lead to bad team chemistry and which could also lead him to asking for big money when his rookie deal is up in a couple of years. Which would be the exact same year that both Love and Beasley's deals are up.

Long story short, I would probably pass and see what we have in Webster/Johnson and if they aren't the answers, then we have to look for someone better than Mayo (Barnes or FA?) this offseason. And if we're going to trade for a wing now, I'd much rather it be a big time defensive player like Iggy.

I'd be slightly interested in thabeet for 10-15 minutes a game for the mem pick? That MEM pick is probably around where he should have been drafted anyway.

Mayo doesn't interest me at this point.

I would offer Utah/Mem picks for Mayo.

Would their owner really give up Mayo to Minnesota? That would pretty much make it official that they screwed up. I know it sounds trivial, but their owner is kind of stupid.

Look on the bright side. If we acquired Mayo, this would be my new sig.

I don't think they would be asking for much. Isn't the Grizzlies owner trying to save money? I know he dropped alot on Gay and Conley, but he was stingy with other players before.

I don't think it would hurt to try out Mayo, he'll probably be better then what we get with their pick anyway.

I like Webster more, Mayo's on the short side also.

If he commands a ton of money I'd rather throw all our money at Kevin Love and Beasley

We can throw all Taylor's money at Love, Beasley, and Mayo. I think Taylor is willing to spend if he knows it will bring in results. If we find out he isn't worth a new contract, he can sign wherever he wants. Personally I'm not really a huge fan of trading for Mayo unless we can pull off a Beasley like steal.

If they are truly salary dumping/avoiding, and it was something like (Brewer or Wayne and/or Koufos) + Memphis pick, I'd be all over that. I'd probably even throw in the Utah pick, since we're struggling to find spots/minutes for a bunch of young players anyway (with several more guys waiting overseas). I think Mayo is highly overrated by some (like the character in my sig), but he is a good player, and would be a nice upgrade at SG. He would work well with Rubio too, even if he's a bit undersized at the 2.

I guess it depends on who else they think they can get? Do we have a realistic chance to draft Harrison Barnes? Probably not. Do we have an opportunity to trade for a star on a big contract? Maybe, but we're talking about Iggy or guys with other flaws/drawbacks that people aren't thrilled with either.

I could more than live with

Rubio/Flynn
Mayo/Webster
Beasley/Johnson
Love/Tolliver/(Perry Jones)
Darko/Pekovic/(Perry Jones)

For Brewer, Ellington, and their pick back I'd do it. Pick has moderate value with the protections and that's the only real value going out in the deal, so I'd say it was worth seeing how Mayo fits before extending him.

Like any other deal a lot of it depends on how Webster looks in his return, but I like Esohony's line up.

I'd rather stick with a Johnson/Beasley/Webster wing rotation than bring Mayo in. I wouldn't want Mayo starting over any of them and I don't think he would want to come off the bench.

Financially, I'd point out that the summer after next, we'd have to find the money to give big contracts to Mayo, Beasley and Love.

It's doable (if we don't use our cap space before the trade deadline), but you better be happy with what we got, because we can't afford much more.

$10 Love
$10 Beasley
$10 Mayo
$10 Darko + Ridnour
$10 Pek + Wes Johnson
$3 Rubio (hopefully on rookie scale)
$3 Other 2010 picks
$7 2011 picks
$2 2012 picks
$65 Payroll

plus anything we get for Flynn. If CBA rules stay the same, the lux was about $70.

This is probably the biggest issue I can see with it. That and he's "small" for a 2-guard, and we just got done dealing with a length problem on the front court. I worry what he does to our defense. Not just our defense right now, but it seems he would severely limit the best defense we are capable of.

That said, it would be pleasant to have a shooting guard that can, you know, reliably shoot the ball.

Man, what I wouldn't give for a young Peja Stojacovic.

Honestly, I wouldn't give up that Memphis pick for him. Reason?

None of us know exactly how the labor thing will turn out or how the draft will happen if there's no season. But the team will eventually lose an unprotected 1st, likely next year, and Memphis' pick would be a good way to grab something from that draft especially if everyone stays this year and it's really deep.

If Memphis somehow did make the playoffs and Minnesota got their pick this year, and they still wanted it+scraps for Mayo, then I'd be cool with it. But right now I'd only entertain offers for the Utah pick.

To be fair, that is going to be the reality whether the Wolves trade for Mayo (or Iggy, etc) or not. They're going over the cap whether they make the trade for a Mayo (or Iggy or whoever). The only way to add players after this season is going to be through trades, the draft (but not in 2012), or exceptions anyway, so what's the choice? They're not getting an established true franchise player in a trade or free agency, and this year's draft is the last chance to get one in the lottery.

The positive might be that they would have more payroll available for salary matching if a some star got disgruntled on another team and could be the final piece here.

Who/what is the team holding out for?

Wow just last season, Mayo was a Top 7 SG in the league.

Dude works real hard. The problem is the grizz management and the coach. They just dropped a lot of money on Gay, and now Conley. This off-season, there were already flying rumors that they want to trade Mayo this season, and it appears to be correct. Look at how they give him less minutes this season.

If we can grab Mayo right now, I would do it. Grizz wants to save money? Give them picks and give them Wes if we have to.

Flynn/Ridnour
Mayo/Webster
Beasley/Brewer
Love/Tolliver
Darko/Pekovic

that is a good looking team. we will finally have a spot up shooter in the SG spot.
