a million bucks is a million bucks. Why take the risk with his bat & health when you can sign another 3B if necessary for the same price & who can be a dependable player for 60 games?

Cause you won't quite get the same production Chavez could possibly bring to the team. Signing another 3B for the same price just means that he's only worth the million bucks. Sign Chavez for a million and it's a lil more of a steal.

The way things are unfolding, I see an outfield of Snider-Wells-Davis with Thames & Patterson battling it out for the 4th OF spot. Bautista can spell a little bit in the OF but will play most of the games at 3B.

I'd agree AA would prefer an outfield of Snider-Wells-Bautista with Davis as the 4th OF. I presume then against some left handers, Bautista would move to 3B & Davis switches with Snider. When Bautista is in RF, it's Johnny Mac & ??? playing 3B. That's probably 60-90 games a year.

If it's this latter scenario, imo, you need someone consistent & healthy where you know what you're getting. How many times have we seen a minor leaguer called up to play solid defense but isn't ready for the big leagues b/c he can't get OB. That's not fun for anyone.

The case for Bautista at 3B is stronger (given the current roster) if Thames has a great spring training. You look at his #'s last year & they obviously stand out. So JB at 3B and an OF of Snider-Wells-Davis with Thames spelling Snider-Davis (and Davis something spelling Wells) would be ideal imo.

But if the Jays can get a solid full-time 3B, an outfield of Snider-Wells-Bautista spelled by Davis & Thames & JB spelling the 3B so Thames gets more at-bats, presuming he can hit at the ML level, would be ideal.

I'm not sure what the benefit of Chavez is other then AA is doing his due diligence in a very thin market for third basemen and a possible reserve. Chavez's defense isn't what it once was, which makes me wonder why AA left Brad Emaus unprotected? Move Hill to third, Emaus to second, and Bautista to right if you really wanted to keep Bautista at right that badly, but offensively, Bautista much more valuable at third.

I'm usually all for low-risk reclamations, but Chavez hasn't played for pretty well 4 years.

He can't be more than a Spring Training invitation. He didn't play any innings with the A's at 3rd last year. Only DH/1B.
