Rafael Soriano (NY Yankees)

Post#1 » by number15 » Fri Jan 14, 2011 11:24 pm

3 years and 35 million

i guess they have their heir to Mariano Rivera in 2 seasons..... scary setup man though. He could probably close for 95% of the teams in the MLB

Yankees have okay starters but their relief is mind boggling

............. :o

with burnett pitching for the yanks, it's a good idea to beef up their bullpen

The scariest the Yanks bullpen has been in my memory was when Rivera was setting up Wettland. I don't like this at all. Teams had better make sure they beat the Yanks before the 8th inning. Possibly the 7th if Joba gets sorted out.

does this mean the Jays will get the angel's 2nd round pick (downs signing), since the angels were not able to sign any of the higher rated type A FA (Crawford, Beltre, Soriano)?

Bullpen is meaningless without a rotation. There's a reason that pitchers the calibre of Soriano have been routinely going for $5M this offseason; they aren't that valuable. And it's still not the best bullpen in the division (Papelbon, Bard, Jenks, Wheeler... yeah). If Pettitte doesn't come back for another year the Yankees likely won't compete with the Red Sox. Look at the names being tossed around for their rotation: Brackman, Nova, Mitre. Yikes. Burnett is going to be heavily relied upon, LOL.

It looks like the owners forced them to sign him.

wasent Downs a Type A free agent?

i might be wrong, but isent that y AA didnt trade him for all at the deadline for that great offer from Yanks or BoSox, cant remember who..... because we would end up with more if Downs walked as a FA anyway

someone clear this

The Blue Jays will be getting the Angels second rounder, their first rounder was protected because they finished in the bottom 15. The thinking was that Angels would sign other Type A free agents like Beltre, Soriano, Crawford etc etc and that second rounder might have been bumped to a 3rd or 4th but the Angels stuck out on all of those free agents and we end up with a pretty decent outcome, a comp round pick and a 2nd round pick for a 35 year old reliever.

If I remember correctly, the great offers we heard (Jesus Montero, Joba) were more AA's asking price for Downs.
