Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley and the importance of pre-draf

Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley and the importance of pre-draft interviews

During the session with Beasley, there were a couple occasions in which (one of) his (two) cell phones went off. Believe it or not, he answered the calls!

New head coach Vinny Del Negro advised him that he was meeting with the owner and that, at that time, there couldn’t be too many things more important than listening to what Mr. Reinsdorf had to say and answering whatever questions the people at the meeting had of him. When Reinsdorf posed the question, “What about college basketball bothered you most?” Beasley contemplated for a moment and said, “When you go on the road and the referees make bad calls.”

When it was Rose’s turn in front of the brass, he sat up straight and was totally focused. He had a thorough grasp of the magnitude of the encounter. He put his ego aside. Consider this is a guy who won back-to-back state titles in high school and went 38-2 in his only season in college, dropping the national championship game in overtime. His answer speaks for the kind of guy Derrick Rose is and why he’s destined for (even more) greatness. What was his response to Reinsdorf’s question, “What about college basketball bothered you most?”

“Losing.”

Those interviews must have made the decision much easier.

Cliff Levingston thought at the time that the decision between Rose and Beasley was an absolute no-brainer in favor of Rose, and that was assuming Rose wouldn't be nearly as good as he is already. That article just further re-affirms that Cliff Levingston was correct.

Wow. Sometimes I look at Derrick in a Bull's uniform and ask, "how did we get so blessed to have this guy on our team and representing Chicago?"

They forgot to include the follow up question:

Jerry Reinsdorf wrote:What's your biggest fear in coming to play for the Bulls?

Derrick Rose wrote:Ummmmm...that I'll win 6 titles, bring enormous success and notoriety to the
franchise, revolutionize the game, and still have to go to war with you to get paid.

This reminds me of the story when Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning were 1 and 1a for the top pick in the NFL Draft. They asked both players, "What will you do when you get drafted and sign your contract?"

Leaf's answer: "Take my friends to Vegas"

Manning's answer: "I would ask for the playbook"

Stern needed a big market to push more NBA games and gear. You know, he is all alone in that lotto room...

I'm starting to think Derrick Rose is some perfectly engineered basketball robot, possibly from the future.

His mission: To make us swoon with man-love.

I'd say he's carrying out that mission with mechanical precision.

I feel exactly the same way.

I also try to think of the absolute horror if we did pick Beasley and watching Rose blow up like he is now for another team.

I think it would be far worse than Portland passing on Durant for Oden.

When the college season started, I thought Beasley was the better fit for us, due to our low post issues. I thought we'd be better with Kirk at the PG and Beasley down low, but the more I saw of Rose, I started to change my stance. You have to take the better overall player when you have a top 5 pick (ahem Heisley).
