You realize that this is terrible for the Hawks, right?

Going into the luxury tax for the services of Bynum for 24 games a year is not really what a penny-pinching ownership group does. Al Harrington and Steve Blake provide little to nothing that isn't already on the roster except a great deal of expense and maybe I'm alone, but I would rather have Marvin Williams on his contract than Ron Artest on his.

If Jamal Crawford, Marvin Williams, Jeff Teague, an '11 ATL first are only an '13 first and Derrick Caracter away from getting Melo and Billups, I'm sure the Hawks would rather cut the Lakers out altogether.

That's illogical. You could rent Melo, but he has not indicated in the slightest that he would sign with the Hawks. Bynum, on the other hand, would improve your team immensely, and allow Horford to be a PF, his natural position.

Incredibly bad for Denver. The only tangible thing they get for Carmelo is the dumping of Harrington's contract. (And Harrington isn't all THAT bad.)

what would Atl want with Melo? He doesn't address a need and isn't going to sign an extension with them either.....also Atl isn't giving up anything of value in this deal, Teague has promise but what is Den going to do with him? They have Lawson to develope....If Atl was to be included they would have to include J. Smith, keeping him around would be redundant as Artest/Smith would share minutes at the 3 and Smith seems more effective at the 4. Den gets nothing out of this deal other then the privelge of paying for overrated underachieving guy in Williams who still hasn't played up to the potential of the players they passed up on with the likes off D.Will/Cp3

Huh? I was just about to come in here and talk about how they make out like sweethearts. Andrew Bynum is EASILY better than anything they give up in this package. Add on Ron Artest and Al Harrington and they just became considerably better. They hurt financially sure, but are the Hawks desperate to keep up with Miami and Boston. I'd be willing to bet they are.

PG: Bibby/Blake
SG: Johnson/Crawford
SF: Smith/Artest
PF: Horford/Harrington
C: Bynum/Collins

They pull Bynum out, and they shift Horford to C and Smith to PF and go fast-break style. I can understand if you want to say this is financially bad for the Hawks, but definitely not talent wise.

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't believe in Bynum, but he cannot stay healthy for the majority of a season. And its only going to get worse. Zydrunas Ilgauskus aside, rarely does big man who is injury plagued for the beginning of his career heals in his later years. A healthy Bynum works, not the injury ridden one that exists. He's played over thirty minutes per game once in his career and that was last year and is now down to 25. He has played in more than 50 games twice in his career and I'm doubtful that he will do it this year.

As everyone notes, this puts the Hawks well within the luxury tax, something I doubt they would do to allow Melo to go to LA.

I also think the rest of the trade is a downgrade for the Hawks. Harrington's unamanageable contract (he is a decent if overpaid bench player) and Ron Artest is not the player he was two years ago. Why would the Hawks want a declining Artest next to Josh Smith on the bench? Is Steve Blake an improvement on Bibby? Maybe slightly, but certainly not enough to mess with the chemistry between Bibby and the starters let alone give up a first round pick.
