WTF: Edgar Bennett new WR Coach

Coach Mike McCarthy has announced a shuffling of his assistant coaching staff to make up for the loss of receivers coach Jimmy Robinson.

McCarthy has moved RBs coach Edgar Bennett to WRs to replace Robinson.

He has moved assistant offensive line coach Jerry Fontenot to RBs coach.

He has moved offensive quality control assistant John Rushing to assistant WRs coach / special teams.

He has hired Joel Hilgenberg, who was an offensive line coach intern last year to replace Rushing at offensive quality control.

The move of Bennett to receivers coach is certainly curious, but it may be move that helps Bennett reach his goal of one day being an offensive coordinator. Bennett would be able to expand his horizons and show what he can do with the passing game.

It's possible he asked for the change. It's also possible McCarthy asked him to help out there.

I don't want to speculate any more because McCarthy is set to speak at 2 p.m. and we should hear his explanation then.

I think the only thing this indicates is that they think he is just a good coach overall. He was always good at catching the ball out of the backfield so I don't think that is an issue.

If he is a good coach they are rewarding him with a chance to diversify his experience possibly on the road to one day being an offensive coordinator and even possibly a head coach.

I don't even know what Bennett, or anyone else, would do as WR coach with the vets we have at that position. I guess you go over formations, routes, blocking assignments, etc...If MM thinks EB can do it I'm sure he can. Just seems like an odd move.

A lot of coaches in the NFL have never even played a down professionally. Joe Whitt was a WR and WR coach before moving over to coach DBs. I don't think something like this is all that surprising.

Interesting. Players love Edgar so I have no problem with this move.

Mike Tice was an O-line (or was it D-line?) coach but played tight end.

This stuff happens all the time. I realize Bennett has always been a RB but guys jump around a lot like this eventually.

Stun move of teh year:

The Green Bay Packers have announced Ryan Grant, James Starks, Brandon Jackson and Dimitri Nance will be moving to wide receiver along with John Kuhn, Korey Hall and Quinn Johnson. Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver and Brett Swain will be moved into the backfield and it is possible the Packers resign James Jones to help with the running back situation.

Bennett played TE in high school I think it was, maybe even a little in college.

This. My first reaction was wtf, but it really doesn't bother me at all and as mentioned, he's just as qualified to coach wr despite playing rb as some guy who didnt play anything is. If he can coach he can coach, boom.

Mike Tomlin was a defensive coordinator before getting hired in Pittsburgh and played tight end in college. A good coach is a good coach.

I'm kinda surprised Egdar didn't get more media attention during the Super Bowl run. Isn't he the only guy to play a somewhat major role on both of the last 2 Super Bowl teams?
