Excel sheet that calculates advanced stats for download here

Post#1 » by alucryts » Sat Feb 26, 2011 5:15 am

Ive been meaning to put this together for a little while now. I know a lot of people always wanna know whats his ts%? whats his PER for the game? etc etc and its usually only a few people who can do it. so, i made an excel sheet for it!

what does it calculate? it calculates an individuals PER, game score, ts%, and ORTG. this can be for a single game or you can add stats for multiple games (ull have to add the different categories yourself but still). you can use these to tinker a number here and there and see how it affects the advanced stats...see how if drose gets 2 more ft's a game and 1 less fga how does it affect his ts%? well heres the stats and their explanations:
---------------------------------------
PER - an estimate of hollingers player efficiency rating. league average is generally 15 ish. 18 and above is good, 20 and above is gooder, 22+ is great, 25+ is excellent, 27+ is really excellent, and 30+ is legendary. below 5 is the bogans.

game score - this is basically a single game version of PER....also by hollinger. it gives a single number to rate a game. the final number correlates somewhat with how youd rate the number of points scored. 10+ is eh....ehhhh average, 20+ is a good game, 30+ is likely one of the best individual performances of the year, 40+ is unheard of legendary. interesting stat if you ask me. also below 5 is also the bogans here.

ts% - the true shooting percentage------54% is average, 58%+ is elite, 50% or below is the jennings.

ORTG - estimates the number of points scored per 100 possessions. kinda self explanatory.
-----------------------------------------

now what in the bloody hell do i do with this excel sheet you ask??!?!?!!? when you first open the sheets your advanced stats will have things like ######, 0.00, #DIV/0, and ######. but dont worry! thats just because there are no stats entered.

when you open the sheet youll see grey boxes.....this is where the stats go. in the top row of stats, there are your shooting data and minutes. these you need to enter by hand from box score. for minutes you need to enter obviously the minutes and the fraction of seconds.....so if scalabrine played 39 minuets and 20 seconds, you enter 39.33333.

the second row of stats is the easy guy. go to NBA.com's box score, and click and drag over a row of stats starting from +/- to pts. right click -> copy (or just control-c) -> left click the grey box under the +/- (or cell A5) -> and hit control-v or right click and paste. this will automatically enter the data into the correct cells. for those copy and paste challenged these can also be entered by hand.

and.....your advanced stats will show up! ENJOY!

p.s. sorry for the ads that site has....but eh it downloads well.

LEMME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK AND IF YOU HAVE ANY STATS YOU WANT ME TO ADD IN THERE.

no problem lemme know if theres any problems i more or less re arranged it from the one i use.

not sure if its worth uploading, but I have another excel sheet that you can enter in each game on each separate line exactly how the one here works (just all stats are on a single line) and you can just dump game after game into it and on another tab it averages all the numbers and finds the advanced stat numbers across as many games as you enter. if anyones interested in that lemme know ill upload that too

good job. these advanced stats are the only ones that really matter IMO.

the rest that have started appearing are just weird. i did a whole series of rants over at blogabull a few weeks ago about how strange stats were being abused and even created by hollinger and other nerds et al to advance agendas that have nothing to do w/reality on the court.

ya theres a whooolllleee bunch of stats that are trying to say the same thing......outside of PER and ts% (maybe game score now) theres really not much else that i pay TOO much attention to. game score is more of a newer thing cuz its all about single games. the ortg thing i dunno i use the team formula so i dont put much stock into it haha. i agree tho the more advanced the stat gets the more remove it becomes from reality.

Neat you did this. The ability to segment a specific set of games for something like PER is not available anywhere else I think.

One note for Game Score and people that might use or look at that. It's a volume stat, not minute adjusted like PER, so better for starters. Any players that don't play big minutes will tend to look bad in it.

I usually use this for individual games:

Doesn't include PER (can't say I care about individual game PER anyway).

This is great! I would love to actually get the other download where you can bunch a number of games and get the average. I was looking for something like that last week lol.

Mid way down first page...google docs for one game:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key ... l=en#gid=0

For sets of games, I made this in about 10 mins....copy and paste from bball ref game logs and you can use sets of games or single games instead of manually entering from box scores.
