RB Kevin Smith likely done as a Lion

Post#1 » by kellmellus50 » Thu Mar 3, 2011 10:31 pm

Lets all celebrate now the lions will have to draft a RB

Running back Kevin Smith’s career with the Detroit Lions likely is over.

Smith said he did not receive a tender offer from the Lions but has no animosity toward the team that drafted him three years ago. He still could re-sign with the Lions, but that appears unlikely.

Well if there is no animosity sounds like he could resurface with us, and since we cut him that says little about his value, so what other teams are going to be interested in him really? Detroit might be his best shot and we could possibly get him to re-sign even cheaper. That's what we should do so that we don't have yet another once useful prospect leaving on a crappy exit strategy. I mean that's Mayhew's job to figure these things out in advance. I did my part correctly by not wanting to draft him in the first place, and then always wanting to trade him every day he was here until today that he's gone, having never swayed from that as being the best path for us to get the most value out of him. We didn't do it my way so now I expect Mayhew to prove he has a way to get more value than what I would have got. C'mon Mayhew, make it happen, the onus is on you and I'm waiting for you to prove me wrong. Or is he just going to lump this in with the other 50 transactions that he got less out of than what I would have done as well? When is this going to stop?

I'd like to see him back at a vet-minimum deal with strong incentives. Talented back but the injuries have been killers so far. I don't really see him getting more than that anywhere else, so there's no reason he shouldn't be a Lion again if he's true to his word.

I kind of hope he leaves. I just don't like his softness.

And him leaving doesn't mean we have to draft a runningback, but won't be against Mark Ingram. There are way too many talented RB's in free agency. Mike Bush, DeAngelo Williams, Ronnie Brown, etc.

The guy I kind of hope leaves is Chris Houston actually. As decent as he was last year there just seems to be a handful of CBs on the FA market that might be even better. I'd rather save every dollar we can and not sign anybody at any position until we know what CBs we can get. Can we get one really expensive CB, or can we actually walk away with 2 FA CBs that might be better than anybody we had last year?

I wouldn't be surprised if we made Morris our #2 back. Smith was ok, but he could be tackled just by breathing on him

I have always liked Morris he goes stright ahead and hits the hole quick the way it should be done.

Morris is ok, but he doesn't strike me as having much breakout star potential. I would prefer if we scrapped him for trade value and kept our RB slots open for sleepers that have a chance to explode, especially considering we already have one giant investment and commitment to a premium player in Jahvid Best. I don't like any of our RBs on the roster to fill those other 2 spots. We should save that for UDFAs or low round draft picks, or future wire claims, while using Morris and AB's value to bolster some other position on the team. If none of our RBs have trade value at this point, then that means we shouldn't have taken them in the first place to then be in this crappy position, and for me I didn't see the value or logic behind adding any of the RBs on our team at the time we added them. Although Kevin Smith wasn't too bad at the time considering how desperate we were at the position and the price wasn't that high to draft him so that left us with a relatively low risk exposure. I'm still waiting for Mayhew to prove me wrong as I think all of our RBs, including Best, are not going to provide the sufficient return to justify their addition at the point in time that we added each of them.
