Laker Fan Says Jaw Broken In Attack At Recent Warrior Game
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Another case of fan violence has surfaced, but this time the incident happened in the Bay Area after a local Laker fan had his jaw broken after reportedly getting punched by a Warrior fan at Oracle Arena.
KTVU talked with the victim Friday afternoon. Shaun Cass said the attack happened at the south entrance to the arena Wednesday night just minutes after the game ended.
"I don't remember getting hit," said Cass. "All I remember is stumbling a little bit and the guy was running away."
Cass said Wednesday night's sucker punch left him with a broken jaw and he has the x-rays to prove it.
"It's a fracture of almost all the way through my jawbone," said Cass. "Looks like it's about a half an inch."
Cass, his father Barry and a family friend went to the game to celebrate Shaun's 25th birthday. Barry and Shaun were decked out in their Los Angeles Lakers gear for the team’s contest against Golden State.
They said three Warriors fans a few rows ahead of them didn't like it and started taunting and threatening them.
The Lakers' fans said after the game, the trio of men ambushed them outside.
"He got in front of me and we were about to fight," remembered Shaun Cass. "And his buddy came out of nowhere and cracked me right in my jaw and fractured me about right there."
Shaun's father Barry said arena security did nothing to intervene.
"My friend was with a security guard and he said. I'm not going to get into this," said Barry.
The Lakers fans said the assailants followed them through the parking lot before they were able to drive away.
On Friday night, Shaun Cass said he won't stop going to basketball games or rooting for the rival team.
"I'm definitely going to any game," Cass said. "I'm not afraid."
Late Friday afternoon, KTVU heard from the Golden State Warriors. The team said this was the first they've heard of the incident and said since no report was filed, they can't comment.
But a team spokesman did say spectator safety is the team's number one priority and they have security on hand for all events.

Looks like the entity owning the Warriors is about to get slapped with a lawsuit.

I am sure the lakers fans did nothing to provove this right? It takes two to tango, but the victim is always an angel.

People love to get into their sports I guess.
Also if you want to get all decked out in your teams gear and head to the visitor's arena and make your little statement... I'm not gonna go so far as to say you're asking for it, but what exactly are you trying to prove

This is pretty tame, in Europe anyone who steps in a rivals arena decked in the opposing teams gear usually leaves in a stretcher.

I agree, what a terrible argument. You're telling me you can't go to another team's arena and show support for your home team without getting assaulted? Give me a break.

QFT
If opposition fans come to a game they should be treated like every other fan.
But having said that, if you're in an oppositions arena, show some respect.

Re: Lakers fan attacked at Warriors game
I know that is is politically wrong and maybe even morally wrong and all that. But that is something I envy about rivalries in European football. Where fans are so passionate about their teams that they have to restrain their violent tendencies. It's almost unthinkable to consider going to a team's home game with the rival team's gear. I once witnessed a home team's fans marching around town chanting their team's name. Then a few rival teams fans shouted their own team's name in jest. What ensued was a chase down and beat down. Here, we call the Celtics-Lakers the greatest NBA rivalry but Celtics fans will shout MVP chants for Kobe. Hawks fans regularly cheer rival players. Bobcats fans don't show up for games but when the Heat or Lakers are in town, you see a mob of fans with Kobe and Wade jerseys.

Can't really make a judgment since we don't know if they were asking for it. You can go into another team's arena with your gear, but you also have to realize the situation and can't act obnoxious.

Agreed. It's one thing to root for your team...it's another to taunt the rival.
