Gabe Gross has decided to retire from major league baseball after 10 seasons.
Gross, 31, signed a minor-league deal with the Marlins last week, but after further consideration decided not to pursue their offer.
"I didn't think it was right for me or my family if I couldn't do it 100 percent," he said. "Sometimes you've just got to move on...For 10 years I've been able to provide for my family through baseball. I've been extremely blessed."
His final major league at-bat came with the Athletics last season.

I remember when he first started to break into the MLB with JAYS, in that preseason.... the man looked like the next best thing in the outfield....... then he was traded in the Overbay deal and never really lived up to anything.... played for several team after...... cant believe its been 10 years

Yeah I remember that preseason where he killed it. He's the reason why you don't take preseason play seriously.

Re: Former Jays prospect: Gabe Gross
i'd like to make this a "former prospects" (hopefully of the JP Ricciardi era), as I was enamoured with so many of them. I actually went on a little bit of a wiki/google binge yesterday, and Gabe Gross was one of the guys I looked up.
How about John-Ford Griffin? Every time he was called up, he did well... yet he seems to be destined to a career in the minor leagues.

it'd be fun if we did some weekly thread looking back on former Jays prospects!
Yeah I can't believe it's been that long. Gabe Gross + Dave Bush + Zach Jackson for Lyle Overbay + Ty Taubenheim

That deal looked ugly at the time...... Gross/Jackson/Bush were three of the top prospects in the Jays system.
Gross was amazing but i guess didnt have too much room in Toronto, Bush was one of the bright young pitchers already at the MLB level for Toronto....... and Zach Jackson was a killer. He was one of the best arms in the Jays system period.
looking back, all three were big busts...... Bush is an average releiver at best and other two are out of baseball
we got a couple of decent seasons out of Overbay
