Derrick Williams Quote - Ohh Boy

Post#1 » by finnegan » Fri May 20, 2011 12:16 am

"I think I'm the No. 1 pick because I have more star quality I would think," the small forward said. "I'm just a bigger person. Just trying to fill in for a big star like LeBron like they're missing. That missing piece. I think that's me."

What exactly is the "star quality" that Derrick is referring to? Look out Demarcus Cousins...

He's more exciting to watch, that is for sure. Big time facials, can shoot the three, has a bigger personality than Irving.

But he might as well get that thought out of his head, he's not going #1.

There is not a good precedent here.

Steve Francis
Michael Beasley
DeMarcus Cousins

Who else has made these type of comments before the draft? But at least Cousins turned into a decent player.

People put their feet in their mouths all the time. If Williams presents himself well in interviews and articulates thoughts with some degree of humility, this should not be a concern. Cousins is a poor comparison. He has a long history of attitude problems and an overtly self centered bearing. He didn't go fifth because there were four players better than him.

Williams, on the other hand, could very easily go first in this draft. So could Kanter for that matter. Irving may be on top of the mocks at the moment, but that does not mean he is a consensus number one player in the eyes of NBA player personnel decision makers.

I think that we may all be shocked if we knew how many teams default their decisions to the mock drafts, for fear of criticism. Not to mention that many people in the NBA hemisphere have more dollars than cents.

At first, I felt he's just trying to sell himself, to get picked #1. But then, I thought it was a little egotistical.

Shocking that a top NBA prospect would have such an ego.

Next thing you'll tell me these kids smoke pot.

I like it. We need a "nut" on this team. Maybe he'll start talking about himself in the third person....

He wants to go #1 and he knows Dan Gilbert wants someone who is willing to step into a role to try and revive the franchise and shove it to LeBron so of course he is going to say something like that.

I'm not so sure if there is anything to it other than he is trying hard to sell himself to the Cavs.

Or the first, second and third person all in the same sentence like Mailman used to.

Derrick Williams plays with the same swagger. The guy was a late bloomer and is very down to earth, and this competitive drive is what has turned him into a great player. Derrick Williams has Blake Griffin like athleticism, but his game is a bit more skill based. His TS% in college was insane and he went to the line at a phenomenal rate.

He's Demarcus Cousins now because of a quote? Talk about overreaction.

He just wants to be selected #1.

Good players set high goals and have confidence.

Example on the wiretap, John Wall wanting to be an MVP in the future:

John Wall is optimistic that the Wizards will find the right pieces this offseason, but he has big plans for his team and himself.

“Next year, I just want to be in the playoffs,” Wall said.

“Everything I didn’t do good this year, you’re going to see me get better at next season, making jump shots, being more confident, less turnovers. But studying a lot, being a better defender, all those things. That’s the same thing Derrick said, ‘I want to be MVP.’ It might not happen next year, but at least by my third year, I want to be in the race.”

I don't know that he will reach that, but it is important to have lofty goals and have confidence.

Deron came out and said he was the best Point Guard in the world, why would I care if this Williams says he's a bigger person (which is true) and that he has start potential (which is also true).

That guy attitude need a complete 360.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

I heard his summit interview, and it didn't seem as bad as the quotes. Also teenagers will make mistakes, especially when they are between college basketball and pro basketball. As he gets older he'll mature. I pictured a Beasley kind of attitude, but I didn't see that in the interview, just someone with a combination of big ego and confidence. You know what though, I'm willing to take a chance if he's available.

Oh what an ego! I really hope he's not the first pick now!

Or the second pick!

But the third pick, yeah, why not.

Hmm reading his twitter posts(btw did a q&a with fans on twitter for a solid half hour) and watching his draft express interview he doesn't seem full of himself at all. Seems like a good guy who is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, if you don't believe in yourself how are you going to become great? He has no problem with talking with any team that wants to talk. Even said he liked being in a small town so he could know most the people in the city. Great kid really hope he falls to us at 3. Hope kanters stock skyrockets.

Michael Beasley believed in himself too, when he said that he was going to be League MVP in his rookie season.

Do you think Derrick Rose, John Stockton, and LeBron James believe in themselves? The never talk like that. Ever! They let their game do the talking.
