Jim Buss Finally Speaks

Post#1 » by Saint18 » Sun May 29, 2011 3:12 am

By the looks of it, fixing the Lakers will be much easier, but a mistake has already been made.

"Looking back on it, we should have contacted Kobe," Buss says. "Kobe said it was management's job to pick a coach. He just said, 'Defense first.' That's what we were doing, but we should have reached out to him."

How will Kobe take to Brown?

"The way Mike impressed the three of us, I would think Kobe would be impressed as well," he says. "Mike is a workaholic and Kobe is the workaholic."

If Brown couldn't control LeBron James on offense, how is he going to do so with Kobe?

"I've seen Kobe go off the place a few times, but I'm sure the coach will know how to handle it," Buss says. "My dad loves Kobe and so do I; we think he has a lot left. And I know Mike has some ideas on how to elongate Kobe's career."

Jimmy Buss trying to clear up the negative response to his recent hiring. btw... i just seem him for the first time- He looks really casual :-?

Yeah, he made a serious error not even calling Kobe, you have to run things by your franchise player weather you like it or not. Even if Kobe expressed some displeasure in Brown, then so be it you have to continue the interviews to see who fits.

the only time I have seen Jim Buss is on the HBO show The Bunny Ranch. he rented like a half a dozen hookers and spent the night with them. I think he dropped like 25Gs that night.

i might get flamed for this but i think they really took kobe's words into consideration. mike brown is known for his defense and kobe said he wanted defense,am i missing something here? if he can get our guys to play defense like he did those guys in cliveland then the league is in trouble.
Only on realgm is 27,000 points, 5 rings, 1 rs mvp and 2 finals mvp considered overrated!

glad he came out and admitted a mistake, can't really ask for more other than going back in time.

also, i still don't get this stuff:

If Brown couldn't control LeBron James on offense

cavs had a top ten offense with lebron and a bunch of average talent, lebron ball was their only hope.

As a man I can respect him for coming out and admitting that he made a mistake by not contacting Kobe. It's a level of respect. You have to contact your Franchise player before making a coaching change. Dealing with the Shaq and Kobe show back in the early 2000's you think that they would learn from there mistakes. But I guess not.

so i actually bothered to read the entire article, some insightful stuff.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketbal ... feedburner

regarding jim buss taking control:

A year ago Jerry Buss talked about his son running 90% of the basketball business. Much of the media took that to mean Jim had a 90% say on decisions made.

"That's just not true," says Jim, a passionate sports fans still upset at the Rams for moving to St. Louis. "Nothing has changed. My dad, Mitch and I discuss everything. If one person feels strongly for something, they might push. I did that when we picked Andrew. But the other two people in the room agreed.

"I do more day-to-day stuff because my dad just isn't interested, but on the big decisions there is the three of us."

about brown's hiring and replacing phil:

The media, though, have Buss hiring Brown as a way of making his own mark while purging the memory of Jackson and the triangle offense.

"What do you do about stuff that just isn't true?" he says.

There have been reports that Buss interviewed only one candidate, Brown.

"No truth to that whatsoever," he says. "My father, Mitch and I interviewed three candidates: Brian Shaw, Rick Adelman and Mike. All fantastic coaches. When the three of us talked later we all came back to Brown."

No matter whom the Lakers hired, Buss says, there was going to be criticism.

"Who fills Phil's shoes?" he says. "We didn't want him to be replaced. We were hoping we'd win another championship and there would be public pressure and pressure from my dad on him that he'd coach again. First and foremost, that's who we wanted."

On trading Bynum, specifically for Melo

Denver never offered Carmelo. We never had a decision to make. We were offered two other players for Andrew, but as a group we had no interest."

That sounds exactly like some PR defensive moves and really nothing of actual interest.

I'm already annoyed with this man. This might be the longest season ever. I feel like the first thing that should have been fixed is the chemistry between the team and the management. I'm glad Buss confessed his mistake, but for the team's sake, I hope Kobe doesn't hold it against the organization. I don't want to see just a professional relationship between Kobe and Brown; they need to really connect in order for this team to perform adequately.

He didn't really say anything in that article to put me at ease. Just the whole "we made this decision as a team, don't blame me!" vibe wasn't too great. This was really a fluff piece, nothing insightful really came out of it.

It just sounds like he's trying to clean up his stupid egotistical move.

Nah, I like the Buss statements ... he called Kobe "the workaholic", said he hired Brown partly on Kobe's demand for defense first, talked about how he loves Kobe and had a conversation with Mike Brown to "elongate (i.e. lengthen)" Kobe's career .... all good stuff.

Maybe Buss will be good for the Lakers ... we'll all find out soon!
