Would you take this deal on July 1st?
It looks like that the Cavaliers and Pistons have agreed in principle to this deal, but the Cavs recently applied for an extension on their LeBron TPE, which they would need in order to absorb Hamilton's contract. If they are applying for an extension, it would seem that the Pistons want to wait until the new CBA is in effect, or at least until the draft plays out, before making this move.
If Cleveland's TPE has expired by that time, we could swoop in for the kill, as there aren't too many other teams with our amount of capspace this summer. Cleveland's plan is to buy out Hamilton's final two years, if they acquire him. But I feel he still has plenty left in the tank, he just couldn't coexist with Kuester. He'd also be a valuable large expiring contract in '12-'13. The Pistons won't trade the #8 pick if it's Knight, Kanter or someone elite like that. But we could pick up a guy like Bismack Biyombo or Tristan Thompson, who could develop in our frontcourt and/or turn into tradebait for another superstar, WITHOUT having to trade Brook.
Anyway, I just wanted to see what Nets fans thought of this possibility. In the wake of news that Duhwight *might* play out his final season in Orlando rather than request/demand a trade in order to sign an extension, our FO might need to switch gears and focus on FA '12. Your thoughts?

What possibility? Who are the Nets trading away in this deal?

Re: Rip/8th pick for Capspace?
Hypothetically, we could agree to a deal on draft night, have Detroit draft the player we want, then on July 1st (or whenever the "new league season" starts if the CBA is not agreed on by that time) the trade can be executed for a big TE and a future 2nd round pick or two.
With that said, I actually think Rip has 2-3 years left in the tank at above average starter level play, but I'm not 100% behind that statement. I also wouldn't be surprised if he sucks the rest of career.
If we're looking at him as our "Ray Allen" kind of guy for our "big 3" I'm going to pass too. He's got a great mid range, but I consider his 3pt range to be just average.
I'm not opposed to this unlike other people, but the one reason I think I'll pass is because of how much Rip will cost to the cap. I think we can be a better player for that level of money. Getting the #8 pick too is really tempting though.
If Rip's traded on draft night then bought out, I'm totally fine going after him, but I wouldn't offer any more than a 2 year deal/3rd year team option worth MLE level money.
I still think we could do better with our assets and our upcoming cap space.

I mean the 8th pick sounds nice and I think Rip can still ball for another year or two but I'd pass he has a huge contract and it runs into 2012. We need Dwight!

27th pick for the 8th and Rip. We have a ton of cap space with not many great free agents out there. It would be nice if they could take one of our contracts that we don't like Outlaw or Farmar.
Going to wait for the new CBA before making a move like this though. Don't want a hard cap where Rip makes over a fifth of the team's salary.

If Rip can still run around the screens non stop for open jumpers~ he's pretty much money.
maybe we can get him and restructure the deal to a longer term if it's possible.

Re: Rip/8th pick for Capspace?
To me there are 2 potential routes to acquiring Rip at his current contract.
1- Outlaw gets bought out (or removed from our cap somehow).
2- We don't acquire another wing that makes more then 5MM (basically we whiff on other targets).
If both of those things happen then I could very well see a scenario, similar to Troy Murphy last year, where BK tries to turn cap space into a productive veteran player with a neutral (or negative) trade value. If we could get a future 1st along with him that would be icing on the cake.

Do it! And then let Rip go so he can finally be a ring chaser.
