Is Chandler better than Bynum?

Post#1 » by Penberthy » Fri Jun 10, 2011 3:16 pm

Put you bias aside and look at what they actually do on the floor. Its true that Tyson might not have the back-to the basket game of bynum or his weight, but he seems to be able to make up for it in other ways.

After watching last night's game, its pretty clear that chandler plays with more energy, and is the superior athlete, can jump higher, run faster, has better hands, and finish around the rim MUCh better (he actually dunks the ball at every opportunity).

Injuries aside, which player do you think helps their team more?

I've always liked Chandler. He's an excellent role player and doesn't try to do more than he's capable, and as you mentioned, he's always out there hustling and making things happen. He also plays with a lot of passion, which is something our bigs don't seem to have most of the time.

Defensively, I think he's better than Bynum. He seems to have the fundamentals to go along with consistent effort, and he's a lot more athletic on top of that. Bynum's advantage is strictly on offense.

Overall, I'd say Bynum was better, but if you don't need offense from your center (outside of maybe 10-12 a game via hustle/lob plays), then I'd take Chandler pretty easily.

The motor on Chandler is insane-- The word "quit" isn't in the guy's vocabulary.

That said, injuries aside, I'd rather have Bynum.

for this Laker team Chandler would be a better fit. he has the ability to dominate the low post defensively both one on one and from the help side. he's always hustling and making the right play on defense and he's more mobile than Bynum.

The proliferation of lanky guys like Chandler is exactly why we need a bigger guy like Bynum...

Bynum wears Chandler down... So no. Chandler isn't better than Bynum and would be mostly redundant with Pau here...

given that Chandler cannot score without a lob or open dunk (occasional put back)....no, Bynum's footwork and the fact that hit hits the hook shot and can be given the ball in the post so he can do work sets him so far apart from the skill set of Tyson

In terms of effectiveness and fulfilling their roles? Yeah, Chandler is much better at that than Bynum.

In overall skillset? Bynum destroys Chandler.

For this team however, I think a guy like Chandler would be a much better fit than Bynum tbh. Athletic, all-out hustle, and extremely tough. If Bynum didn't have knees of glass though, this wouldn't even be a discussion.

if Tyson was on our team, Bynum would chew him up every time we play against him, and Howard would lick his shops as well

If only he could have chewed him up a few weeks ago...

I actually think he did. I don't believe our problem was a underperforming Bynum, or that Tyson Chandler got it going. It was more on the rest of our team...Bynum was the only one there to win

That's assuming Bynum is healthy enough every time we play against him. Fat chance.

Chandler is a better fit for Gasol than Bynum is.

No he isn't better than Drew, Tyson is in the mode of Noah and other limited 5's in the league....nothing more than a hustle player. Yet can't run your offense through him because he does NOTHING great at all.

It was a reason the Bulls dumped him, he was touted out of high school as a scorer....I should know because I saw him during that time. He played in a weak league in school, being guarded by guys 6'4" to 6'5" at best.

NBA scouts were duped by his asinine high school stats and labeled him a scorer. Then he became expose in the league before figuring out what he really was........a role playing hustle player. These guys don't have a long shelf life. Once he racks up more than a few injuries he'll fade quicker than jeans in bleach.

I apologize for not reading the contents of this thread. But going off the title, I would say no.

Is he better than Bynum? No.

However every championship team needs a role player to step up like a superstar to win an impossible game. Chandler, Terry, Barea and even Peja did it for the Mavs this season.

Artest did it for us last season. Ariza and Shannon the season before.

Leon Powe & James Posey did it for Boston in 08.

bynum out-rebounded and almost doubled up chandler in scoring in the DAL series. i'd be excited to see what bynum could do on the defensive end against a non-offensive threat like anthony who wouldn't be a constant threat for a lob.
